TULSA, Okla. – Jadyn Chee and Jordan Frederick each scored as Tulsa picked up its first conference win of the season, 2-1, over Rice at the Hurricane Soccer Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
The Golden Hurricane improved to 3-6-3 on the season, 1-0-2 in The American, while Rice fell to 2-9-1 and 0-3-0 in league play.
"Rice is a good team," Tulsa head coach Jim Rhein said. "They play a different style than we do, but they play their style real well. It's kind of a gambling style with three in the back against our front three. They played in a way that Jordan (Frederick) likes to play, and that's why she had such a good day."
Tulsa will return to action next Thursday, Oct. 5 on the road at North Texas. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Denton, Texas.
How it Happened
Tulsa had a few good looks in the opening half of the game. In the 22nd minute, Ashlyn Fernandez got on the end of a corner and sent a header flying for the right side of the net. The goalkeeper was able to get a hand on the shot and push it onto the post and out.
The Hurricane broke through near the end of the half. With 42:14 elapsed, Tatum Sanders sent a long goalkick that got over the head of the midfielders. Frederick touched it by a defender and then set Chee free with a perfectly weighted ball. Chee rounded the goalkeeper to her left and placed it into the open goal to give Tulsa a 1-0 lead at the intermission.
Rice evened the score just under 10 minutes into the second half. Kallie Mckinney was first to the ball on a cross from Kaylyn Simmons and was able to place it past a diving Sanders to tie the game at one in the 54th minute.
Both teams had a couple of chances to take the lead, but it was the Hurricane who eventually made it count. With 15 minutes to play, Jadyn Chee turned a defender near the sideline in the Tulsa half. She raced down the field and played a ball to Kaylyn Simmons in the middle of the field. Simmons took a touch and found Frederick. The forward took a touch with her left foot to set up a right-footed shot from just outside the box that beat a diving goalkeeper and settled into the left side of the net to give Tulsa the winning goal.
