Tulsa Drops 4-1 Decision at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Though the Tulsa women's tennis team started the day with the opening score in doubles play, TU would struggle in singles action, falling 4-1 to the Memphis Tigers Sunday in Memphis. The Golden Hurricane dropped to 5-2 on the year while the Tigers improved to 3-1.

The doubles point boiled down to the No. 1 position after the Tigers grabbed a 6-0 decision in the second position followed by a 6-3 winner by junior Ana Naranjo Martinez and freshman Tayla Wilmot in the No. 3 spot.

Junior pair Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings erased a 3-0 deficit to tie it up at four games all. The duo would never trail again as Memphis' Camila Soares and Leonie Moeller forced a tiebreaker set at 6-6. In the tiebreaker Berlanga and Hutchings scored the first point and never looked back, cruising to a 7-4 finish to give the Hurricane the initial 1-0 advantage.

Memphis would take control of the dual match in the singles portion of the day with a pair of wins in the No. 2 and 6 positions, both in straight sets, to take a 2-1 lead over the Hurricane.

The Tigers followed up with two more wins in singles play in the first and third positions to win the match 4-1. Though Berlanga and Hutchings battled to tiebreakers in their second sets, both would fall just shy 7-4 in their respective tiebreaker sets. Ana Naranjo Martinez (4-6, 6-1, 3-3) and Myroslava Zelenchuk's (7-5, 2-3) matches in the No. 4 and 5 spots were left unfinished.

The Tulsa women return home to the Michael D. Case Tennis Center to face Purdue (4-1) Saturday, Feb. 3, at 10:30 a.m.
