Hurricane Earns a Road Point at UAB

10/12/2024 10:43:00 PM | Men's Soccer

TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa men's soccer team got its first road result of the season with a 1-1 draw at UAB on Saturday evening at PNC Field.

The Hurricane (2-7-3, 1-2-1) took an early lead on a Gijs Hovius goal, his second of the season. UAB (4-3-4, 1-2-1) responded 13 minutes later to level things. Neither team managed to find the net in the second half as the teams shared the spoils.

TU outshot the Blazers 13-9 on the evening and 5-3 in shots on target. Alex Lopez made a pair of saves in net for Tulsa, while Jonathan Munteanu made four for UAB.

Alvaro Torrijos picked up his second assist of the season and second in as many league games, finding Hovius for Tulsa's lone goal.

It was a relatively clean night of action, with UAB earning the lone caution in the 37th minute.

How it Happened
In the 20th minute of action, Tulsa earned a free kick in its own half. Taking it quickly, Alvaro Torrijos brought the ball forward before playing a fantastic through ball to find Gijs Hovius on the right side. Hovius took his first touch just inside the box on the right side and it carried him to the near side of the goal box, setting up a tough angle. He fired the shot on target and it found its way between the goalkeepers legs and got over the line for a TU goal.

The Hurricane lead would last for 13 minutes. Tony Kim cut back into the Tulsa box on the left side before taking a shot that deflected off a Tulsa player and UAB's Humphrey Doe. Alex Lopez had anticipated the shot and dove to his right, but the deflection left the goal open, and Doe was able to react first and punch it home. There was a question of if the ball had hit Doe's arm, which would have negated the goal, but VAR was inconclusive, and the goal stood.

Tulsa's best chance to retake the lead came on a curling effort from Camilo Vargas in the 67th. He was about three yards outside the box on the right side, cutting onto his left foot and sending a shot for the far corner that forced a nice diving save from UAB's Munteanu.

The Blazers had an opportunity in the 77th off a corner. The ball in took multiple deflections and pinged around the box before falling to a UAB attacker unmarked inside the goal box. Lopez got down to make a brilliant save from point-blank and preserve the draw.
