Hurricane Drop Heart Breaker to South Florida

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Volleyball fought a five-set battle with the Bulls of South Florida. At the end of five sets, Tulsa fell to the Bulls 2-3 (19-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-23, 12-15) in a very tight match. This is the second conference loss for the Golden Hurricane as they move to 12-6 overall and 4-2 in the American Athletic Conference. The Bulls remain undefeated in league play as they move to 6-0 in the AAC and 10-7 overall.

Both teams were able to create success from the service line and averaging over .865 percent with Tulsa being the frontrunner with .874 and South Florida in trail at .867 percent. Tulsa was able to post 11 service aces with South Florida only finding three.

The Bulls, however, were able to find success in other parts of the game as they led in almost every other stat category. Tulsa was able to lift 13.2 digs per set while being led by libero Marta Pecalli posting 23 digs and averaging 4.6 digs per set. The Bulls were able to find themselves 75 total digs averaging 15 per set. The Bulls had strong leadership in the defensive digs with Lia Schneider (20) and Maria Clara Andrade (15) providing the foundation.

Beth Bayless had another notable evening as she pounded 16 kills and recorded 7 digs. Tatum Tornatta also provided more consistency to the offense, taking 35 attempts and showing for 14 kills posting a .286 hitting percentage. Also providing some power at the net was Camryn Lingenbrink with her .429 hitting percentage, showing for another 10 kills on 21 attempts.
The offense would not have been as successful if it weren't for setters Brayden Hipp (31) and Brittany Bacorn (16) who provided all but six of the Hurricane's 53 assists. Hipp was able to provide 6.2 assists per stanza with 9 digs as well for the defense.

The Bulls found much success in the ESPN+ player of the game, Maria Clara Andrade, who dropped 24 kills and 15 digs for the South Florida Bulls.

Tulsa will hit the road for Denton, Texas to take on North Texas on Friday, Oct. 18, at 6 p.m. You can catch the action on ESPN+ coverage starting at 6 p.m. central.

How It Happened
SET 1 | Set one opened with both team teams being very competitive right from the first serve until a kill by Imani Hartfield led to a five-point run at 14-13 to break open the lead to 14-18 in favor of the Bulls. The momentum came to a halt for the Bulls when a service error by Caroline Dykes allowed space for Tulsa to bring the lead back down to one at 18-19. The Bulls then went on a 6-1 run to close out set one 19-25.
 
SET 2 | After dropping the first two points of the set Tulsa quickly gained momentum to jump ahead to a 12-5 lead. The Bulls were able to find some traction and go back-and-forth with the Hurricane until a series of attack errors plagued the Bulls allowing Tulsa to jump out to a nine-point lead at 19-10. The Hurricane were able to maintain the momentum to close out the set 25-18.
 
SET 3 | A tight set three of volleyball was played up until 16-15 when a service error by Beth Bayless allowed the Bulls to step into a 5-1 run and maintain control of the set. After fighting to try to regain control of the third set, the Hurricane were unsuccessful, unfortunately dropping the set 21-25.
 
SET 4 | The Bulls quickly tried to establish control of the set with three kills from Maria Clara Andrade within the first 10 points. Tulsa continued to battle through the entire set with crucial points being earned by two successful challenges from Coach Ramatowski. The set was neck and neck throughout the entire stanza up to 23-23 until an attack error gave Tulsa the advantage in the fourth set and moved the score to 24-23. The final point of the set came off a kill from Beth Bayless giving the fourth set win to Tulsa at 25-23.
 
SET 5 | Tulsa had seemed to run out of steam while South Florida was able to construct 10 points to the Tulsa five. Momentum started to change when another successful challenge reversed the score in favor of Tulsa. Against all efforts, Tulsa unfortunately fell having two service errors in the last five points of the set. The Bulls took the match with a fifth-set win at 12-15.
