Hurricane Grab Ninth Sweep of the Season in Win Over Memphis

10/27/2024 5:13:00 PM | Volleyball

Tulsa, Okla. — Another American Athletic Conference match-up for the Hurricane this time with the Tigers of Memphis. Tulsa was able to deliver their third straight sweep on Sunday with the Tigers on the receiving end of the 3-0 score (25-19, 28-26, 25-18). Tulsa once again betters their record to 15-7 and conference record of 7-3 on a three-game win streak. Memphis falls to 10-12 with an AAC record of 4-6.

Tulsa was also able to highlight the great accomplishment of Marta Pecalli. Pecalli was able to cross the milestone of 2,000 career digs against UAB on Friday (10/25). The Golden Hurricane presented her with a commemorative volleyball to celebrate the milestone prior to the match.

Defense was a smaller part of the match for the Hurricane on Sunday as the team only collected five team blocks. However, the Hurricane were able to continue their dominant streak of digs per set by clearing 71 total team digs which gave them an average of 23.66 digs per set the highest of the year.

Individually on the defensive front, the Hurricane were supported by Junior setter Brayden Hipp who collected 19 digs and led the team in the category. Marta Pecalli was also able to add on another 16 digs and Beth Bayless contributed 10. On the receiving end of serves, Tatum Tornatta had 17 receptions and only one error giving her receive percentage of .994.

The Hurricane were also able to control the match from the net collecting 52 team kills to Memphis's 38. Leading that charge was Beth Bayless who collected 13 kills with a .333 hitting percentage. Tornatta was also able to tack on 11 while Rachel Brown had another 9 kills. Tulsa also had Ari Mongare who hit for .385 with six kills and Tytiana Johnson who hit for .467 with eight kills.

Not only did Beth Bayless post 13 kills but she also collected 10 digs earning her a third double-double on the year. Brayden Hipp also was able to contribute 23 assists on top of the 19 digs earning her another double-double making it her 13th on the year. Britney Bacorn also contributed another 17 assists to the team's total 49.

Much of the success for Tulsa in Sunday's match was found in the dominance at the net being able to hit over .230 in every set highlighted by set three with .282. Another key to the match was Tulsa's ability to receive the ball on a tough serving Memphis squad that averaged 1.90 aces per set but only earned 1.33 aces per set in the match.

When things went well in the match for Memphis it was because Hannah Jones was able to post 10 kills and Abigail Schlueter was able to continue her streak of impressive defense with an average of 6 digs per set in the match.

The Golden Hurricane close out their three-game home stand on Friday, November 1st with a match against the Shockers of Wichita State University. The first serve is at 6:00 P.M. inside the Donald W.
