Manyoma and Naranjo Win The American Women’s Tennis Doubles Championship

HOUSTON, Texas ­­— University of Tulsa senior tennis duo of Mariana Manyoma Velasquez and Ana Naranjo Martinez became the first women's doubles champions in the inaugural American Athletic Conference Individual Championships Sunday morning at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on the Rice campus in Houston.
 
Manyoma, a transfer from UT-Arlington, and Naranjo a three-year letterwinner at TU, took down Millie-Mae Matthews and Malwina Rowinska of Florida Atlantic in a 5-7, 6-1, [10-7] comeback victory as the No. 3 seed in the tournament.
 
The Golden Hurricane pair took down Darya Schwartzman and Fernanda Martinez of Rice in a back-and-forth 7-6 (3), 3-6, [10-5] decision in the semifinal on Saturday. Prior to that, they defeated Melisa Senli and Sienna Leeson of South Florida 8-6 in the quarterfinal round after receiving a first-round bye.
 
As conference champions, Manyoma and Naranjo will represent The American at the ITA Conference Masters Nov. 7-10 at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga., where they will fight for one of three bids to the NCAA Individual Championships.
