Tulsa Women Grab Wire-to-Wire Win Over San Jose State

12/11/2024 2:22:00 AM | Women's Basketball

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Tulsa women's basketball team dominated the 6-5 San Jose State Spartans Tuesday from start to finish on their home court, winning by 29 points for a 77-48 decision. The Golden Hurricane led the Spartans wire-to-wire for their first road win of the young season, improving to 4-5.

Three Hurricane reached double-digit scoring territory with redshirt junior Paige Bradley leading the arena with a career-best 17 points. Senior Delanie Crawford enjoyed a 15-point game, and sophomore Mady Cartwright had her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Following Cartwright in boards was Bradley with nine rebounds, just one shy of what would have been her second double-double this season. Together, they helped Tulsa out-rebound the Spartans by 17 rebounds, winning the team board battle 46-29. Strong rebounding by the Hurricane led to 15 second-chance points on the night.

Tulsa's bench came alive with 24 points with seniors Kristol Ayson (eight points) and Lexie Foutch (seven points) contributing in all aspects of the game. Every player who set foot on the court for the Hurricane scored three or more points Tuesday night. Every Spartan scored as well.

Ayson had five assists, just one behind the team-leading effort from Crawford.

The Hurricane's transition game shined with 19 fast-break points. Many of those points came from Spartan turnovers which gave way to 18 TU points off turnovers.

Three-point shooting was a big difference as TU finished 11-29 on the night for a 37.9% mark while holding the Spartans to just 3-20 triples for a season-low 15%. Tulsa went on to cap the game on a 42.9% shooting night (27-63), and SJSU finished 16-52 (30.8%) from the field.

"I was really proud of our team tonight," Head Coach Angie Nelp said. "It was such a great team effort today. We had multiple players scoring tonight. But the biggest area for me this game was the rebounding. The way our guards came in and they attacked the boards early on the defensive side allowed us to run the game. Shooting a great percentage helps, and I feel like we shot the ball well, especially early on. We shot the ball really well which allowed us to set our defense a little more. This is a tough rebounding team that we just played, and I'm proud of the way that we battled on the boards."

San Jose State's Sofia Kelemeni and Hennie van Schaik each led the Spartans with nine points. Djessira Diawara had a team-high seven rebounds. A former Golden Hurricane who played for TU last season, Amira Brown, started for the Spartans and was held by Tulsa's defense to 1-7 shooting for just two points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST QUARTER . . .
Tulsa scored first with a Delanie Crawford turnaround jump shot in the paint.

Crawford would go on to score 10 points in the first quarter, fueling an 8-0 scoring run and helping TU lead by as much as 14 points at 18-4 at 4:04 before closing out the frame 21-9.

San Jose State turned the ball over seven times and gave up nine points to Tulsa on fast breaks. Tulsa shot 8-16 in the frame and held the Spartans to 3-13 shooting (23.1%).

IN THE SECOND QUARTER . . .
The Hurricane blew through the Spartans with a 29-point quarter built by 11-19 field goal shooting and 3-6 three-pointers. The offense played up-tempo with 10 fast-break points and five points off turnovers.

Paige Bradley scored 13 points in the period with a near-flawless 6-7 mark from the field.

Tulsa's defense was nearly impossible to penetrate, holding the Spartans to just six points off 2-10 shooting and a 0-4 mark from three in the quarter.

A last-second three-pointer from McKayla Miller gave the Hurricane a 35-point lead at 50-15 entering the half.

At halftime, Tulsa was 19-35 from the field (54.3%), including 6-15 from three-point land (40%), and 6-8 (75%) in free throws. San Jose State was just 5-23 (21.7%) in field goal shooting, 1-7 (14.3%) in three-ball play and 4-8 at the free throw line.

IN THE THIRD QUARTER . . .
A Jade Clack three-pointer gave Tulsa its largest lead of the day at 42 points (64-22) with 4:10 on the clock in the third quarter.

Former Golden Hurricane Amira Brown, who started for the Spartans, attempted a layup with 50 seconds left in the third quarter and was blocked by her former teammate Lexie Foutch.

San Jose State would finally put together a quarter with more than 10 points, finishing with 14 points to Tulsa's 18 in the frame. Each team had a 6-0 scoring run in the quarter as Tulsa entered the fourth quarter up 68-29.

Mady Cartwright and Paige Bradley each had four boards in the third quarter.

IN THE FOURTH QUARTER . . .
Although TU loosened the reigns a bit in the fourth quarter, the Hurricane did just enough to put the game in the win column.

Kristol Ayson scored six of Tulsa's nine points in the final period while SJSU had their best quarter with 19 points with 8-15 shooting and holding the Hurricane to a 2-15 mark.

Tulsa would go on to close out the game for the 77-48 win.
