The Series with Grambling State
- Thursday marks the fourth meeting between Grambling and Tulsa ... the series has been all TU with every game played in the Reynolds Center.
- The teams last met almost exactly nine years ago on Dec. 2, 2015, in a game that ended in the Golden Hurricane's favor 79-51 in Tulsa.
- The past three matchups:
- 12/17/2011.....Tulsa, Okla.......W, 61-56
- 12/22/2012.....Tulsa, Okla.......W, 75-62
- 12/02/2015.....Tulsa, Okla.......W, 79-51
Education Day in the Reynolds Center
- The University of Tulsa women's basketball team is excited to welcome hundreds of students from the Tulsa Public Schools system, Broken Arrow Public Schools and the various private academies and institutions of the greater Tulsa area for an 11 a.m. game with Grambling State.
- Like Tulsa, the Tigers are 2-5 to start the year ... GSU's only wins have come against non-Division I teams in Centenary College (131-30) and Xavier University of Louisiana (69-55) for the first two games of the season.
- Since their two opening wins, Grambling has lost five straight, all on the road. Last week they took 20+ point losses to Cal and Arizona before losing a close one to Oregon State (63-56) earlier this week.
- Last year, Grambling State went 23-10 under first-year head coach Courtney Simmons, who took them to the second round of the WNIT.
- The Tigers are led by Kahia Warmsley's 94 points resulting from 13.4 points per game.
- As a team, Grambling is sixth in the nation for rebounds per game (47.43) and third for o-boards per contest (19.9).
Home Court Advantage
- The Tulsa women's basketball team has been deadly in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
- Tulsa is 17-4 since the start of last season, 28-8 since 2022-23 and 36-13 under fourth-year head coach Angie Nelp.
- 2024-25: TU is 2-2 at home so far this season.
- 2023-24: The Hurricane enjoyed their winningest home record in program history, going 15-2 under the lights of the Reynolds Center, including 2-1 in postseason play in the WBIT.
- 2022-23: Tulsa went 11-4 and started the home slate 9-0.
- 2021-22: The Hurricane enjoyed its first winning home record in three years at 8-5 under Nelp in her first season at TU.
Dynamic Crawford Scores and Boards
- Returning All-American senior guard Delanie Crawford is Tulsa's scoring leader through the first seven games.
- The multi-level scorer has reached double-figure points in all but one game, peaking with 26 points against Marshall (11/23) in the WBCA Showcase.
- She enjoyed her 18th career 20+ scoring game against Chicago State (11/27).
- This season, Crawford is averaging 17.1 points off 5.6 FG, 2.4 3PT and 3.6 FT per game.
- She's shooting .333 from the field (39-117), .288 in threes (17-59) and .862 at the charity stripe (25-29).
- Crawford ranks second in The American for points per game (17.1) and free throw percentage (.862)
- She has also emerged as the rebound leader for the Hurricane, averaging 6.3 boards for 44 total on the season so far.
Hill Stepping up on Offense
- Returning sophomore guard Elise Hill has scored in double-figures in seven of her last 10 games for the Golden Hurricane dating back to the end of last year.
- She had 12 points in the season-opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, scored 12 more in a team-leading effort at Missouri State (11/10), scored 12 again against ORU (11/17), had a season-high 13 points against Marshall (11/23) and recorded 12 once more against Creighton (12/1).
- Hill called her own number in the waning seconds of the season-opener against UAPB, sinking the game-winning three-pointer with less than a second to go to seal the 63-60 win.
Tidbits on the TCU Transfer Paige Bradley
- Redshirt junior Paige Bradley, an offseason transfer from TCU, has made an immediate impact for the Hurricane with six of seven starts.
- Bradley (4.7 rpg for 33 boards) ranks third on the team in rebounding.
- She averages 6.7 points, the Hurricane's fifth-best mark.
- Bradley had her first double-figure scoring game for Tulsa against Marshall (11/23). She had three with the Horned Frogs in her two active seasons (injured her junior year in 2023-24).
- She brought down a career-high 10 rebounds against Marshall (11/23), helping her achieve her first double-double.
TU Winning the Turnover Margin
- Tulsa is handling the ball better than its opponents through the first seven games of the season with a +2.14 turnover margin per game, the third-highest among all American Athletic Conference teams so far.
- Opponents have turned the ball over 135 times compared to Tulsa's 120.
- The turnover battle has been largely due to TU's ability to steal the ball, out-stealing opponents 67-53.
- TU is second in the AAC for steals per game with 9.57.
Deadly Free Throw Shooters
- Tulsa has been very effective at the line, thanks in part to The American's top two free throw shooters in Mady Cartwright and Delanie Crawford.
- Cartwright is 20-22 for a .909 mark while Crawford is right behind at .862 after shooting 25-29.
- Cartwright is the only player in the league making over 90% of her free throws.
- Cartwright has had three perfect games from the stripe, including a 4-4 mark in the season-opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (11/6), an impressive 8-8 tally against Marshall (11/23) for Tulsa's 14th-ever perfect free throw game when making over eight free throws and another 4-4 contest against Chicago State (11/27).
- Crawford had an 8-9 game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and a 5-5 contest against Georgia (11/21) ... she went 2-2 last time out.
- Paige Bradley is 8-9 (.889) on the year in free throws at 1.1 per contest ... she is just outside the threshold of 2.5 FT per game to be ranked in the league.
- Tulsa ranks second in the conference with a team free throw average of .721.
- TU shot its 19th perfect free throw game in program history against Chicago State (11/27), going 10-10 from the line … it's TU's third time ever having a perfect free throw game with over 10 attempts (10-10 vs. Hawaii (2-27-03); 12-12 vs. Nevada (3-8-03).
- The Hurricane went 10-14 in free throws in the fourth quarter to outscore the UAPB Lions 15-5 in the final period to complete a 17-point comeback victory, the largest in school history.
Cartwright the Swiss Army Knife
- Returning sophomore guard Mady Cartwright shines on both offense and defense for the Hurricane.
- She is one of three players to start every game this season, along with Delanie Crawford and Elise Hill.
- Cartwright leads the American Athletic Conference with a .909 free throw percentage.
- On offense, she ranks third on Tulsa for points (55), scoring average (7.9) and free throws (22).
- On the defensive end, Cartwright is second on the team for defensive boards (4.0), third for steals (1.1 for 8 steals) and fifth for blocks (3).
Crawford Climbing the Career Charts
- Delanie Crawford through 99 career games in four seasons with the Hurricane stars in numerous top 10 career charts in program history.
- She ranks third in three-pointers made with 201 ... she has a chance to set the team record this season as she is just 21 treys behind Kara Pongonis-Paslay's (2002-06) 222 and 32 behind Kelsee Grovey's (2012-16) 233.
- Crawford is also eighth for field goals made (445) and in career points (1,315).
First Half Woes
- Losses for the Hurricane have been a tale of two halves as poor first halves have hurt TU's ability to put games away.
- Tulsa has been outscored 261-203 through seven first halves, while outscoring opponents 225-185 in second halves.
- Tulsa has been looking to turn around its slow starts in two of the last three games, outscoring Marshall 45-43 and Chicago State 42-29.
- Quarter Breakdowns:
Tulsa 102 101 113 112 11 439
Opponents 128 133 105 80 15 461
Nelp Over Halfway to Century Mark in Wins.
- Tulsa's Angie Nelp won her 60th career game in her four seasons with a 63-60 win against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the 2024-25 season opener on Nov. 6, 2024.
- She is currently 61-39 six games into her fourth season.
- No previous Tulsa coach had reached 50 wins in their first three seasons … only three other Tulsa head coaches won more than 60 games in their careers.
