TAMPA, Fla. –– Following a tough two game homestand, the Golden Hurricane men's basketball team travels back to Florida to face conference-leading South Florida in a nationally televised Wednesday evening matchup in the Yuengling Center.
Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. (CT) and will air on ESPNU with Matt Schumacker and Sean Harrington bringing fans the action. TU fans can also catch the game on Big Country 99.5 FM and the Varsity Network app. Bruce Howard and JR Rollo have the call.
Tulsa (12-11, 3-8 The American) and South Florida (17-5, 10-1 The American) have only known each other as conference opponents, playing 14 times since the first meeting in January 2015. The Hurricane has mostly dominated the series, winning 12 of the contests, including seven by 10 or more points. However, South Florida finally grabbed its first victory over Tulsa in the initial meeting last season, and then replicated the result later to sweep the season series. Tulsa will look to get back to its winning ways in Tampa, where TU is 6-1 all-time against the Bulls.
TU fell in both of its home contests last week, first in a 68-55 loss to North Texas in the midweek before dropping the weekend finale 70-63 against UAB. The Hurricane carries a three-game skid into Tampa. Tulsa's 3-point shooting has gone cold in the past three games, going 11-61 (18 percent) from beyond the arc. In the eight conference games leading up to this stretch, the Hurricane had knocked down seven or more 3-pointers in each game, hitting double figures on five occasions, including a season-high 16 over UTSA.
Freshman guard PJ Haggerty is having a historic season for the Golden Hurricane. The nation's leading freshman scorer (19.8 points per game) was named The American Freshman of the Week on Monday for a record-breaking 10th time. He passed UCF's Taylor Hendricks (2022-23) for most freshman weekly awards in conference history.
Haggerty is also within range of Tulsa's all-time freshman scoring record. At 456 points, he's 14 shy of the legendary Shea Seals, who scored 470 in his 1993-94 freshman campaign. The Crosby, Texas native features on a few other lists, sitting fourth for freshman steals (43) and fifth for assists (81) after passing Anthony Pritchard (2021-22) on Sunday. He also moved into fifth on Tulsa's single season free throws rankings, sitting one behind Jerome Jordan's 172 made free throws in 2009-10.
The Bulls are having one of their best seasons in school history under first year head coach Amir Abdur-Rahim, racking up 17 wins, which is already the most since winning 24 games in 2018-19. South Florida have won 10 conference games for the second time in school history and looks primed to eclipse the 12 wins from the 2011-12 season in the Big East.
Chris Youngblood is pacing South Florida's scoring, averaging 15.0 points per contest. His 24 points on Saturday helped the Bulls overcome a 13-point halftime deficit to knock off Rice and hold its spot atop The American standings. Selton Miguel (14.5) and Kasean Pryor (12.0) also average double figures in points, while Brandon Stroud cleans the glass to the tune of 5.9 rebounds per night.
Following Wednesday's game at South Florida, Tulsa returns to the Reynolds Center to welcome the Rice Owls on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Hurricane will also celebrate Legends Day. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
