STILLWATER, Okla. — The 68th-ranked Tulsa men's tennis team engaged in the annual showdown Tuesday with in-state rival Oklahoma State in Stillwater, coming up short 4-1 to the No. 31 Cowboys after claiming the doubles point and suffering four straight singles losses. The Golden Hurricane fell to 6-10 on the season, while the Cowboys improved to 12-4.
Â
Tulsa's day in Stillwater was highlighted by an excited doubles competition to start the match. After dropping the No. 2 position, Tulsa stormed back with wins by the freshman duo Alex Okonkwo and Victor Tosetto in the third position (6-1) followed by 55th-ranked Pierce Rollins and Timothy Carlsson Seger (6-3) atop the lineup, giving the Hurricane a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play. Okonkwo and Tosetto improve to 4-2 together with wins in each of their last three completed matches.
Â
The Hurricane couldn't ride the momentum into singles play as the Cowboys would pull out wins in the Nos. 1, 3, 4, and 6 positions to run away with the dual match 4-1, leaving senior Thiago Pernas and Okonkwo's matches in the second and fifth spots unfinished.
Â
Though only two singles matches went to third sets, Tulsa players fought valiantly as three of the positions went to tiebreak sets at six games all, including Nos. 2, 3, and 5. The Cowboys would win each of those tiebreakers, however, on the way to closing out the action.
Â
The Tulsa men will remain in Stillwater to take on the 11th-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini at the Greenwood Tennis Center on Thursday, March 14, at 3 p.m.
