OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Golden Hurricane limited No. 2 Oklahoma's opportunities for much of Tuesday evening but couldn't get it going on the offensive end as the Sooners eventually broke through and Tulsa fell 8-0 at OSGE Field at the USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.
Tulsa falls to 27-15 on the season, while the Sooners improved to 39-4.
OU scored all of its runs in two innings, putting up three in the third and five in the sixth to walk-off the Hurricane. A grand slam blew the three-run game open in the bottom of the final frame. Tulsa's best chance to strike came in the fourth inning with a hit batter and catcher's interference putting two on with two out. But a strikeout ended the threat and Tulsa would not get a runner on the rest of the game.
Senior Kylee Nash (9-3) got the start and was tagged with the loss. She pitched three innings and allowed three runs, all earned, on four hits with a trio of walks and two strikeouts. Anneca Anderson came on in relief and pitched two innings. She allowed four runs, three earned, on three hits and struck out a batter. Alexa Hopkins gave up a hit and a run in her 0.1 innings of work.
Kierston Deal (9-1) pitched a complete six innings for the Sooners. The left handed sophomore didn't allow a hit from the Hurricane and her only blemishes came on a walk and catcher's interference in the fourth inning. Her performance was aided by a fantastic diving play by right fielder Rylie Boone to rob Kailyn Bearpaw of a sure extra-base hit, and a diving catch of a Maci Cole line drive from third baseman Alyssa Brito.
Tulsa's defense came to play as well. Claira Skaggs had a pair of nice catches off line drives at third, including turning a sharp double play in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Anderson struck a batter out, and then Emma Vickrey and Abby Jones combined to catch the base runner attempting to steal for another TU double play.
#2 OKLAHOMA 8, TULSA 0 – Six Innings
The Sooners drew first blood in the third inning. Third baseman Alyssa Brito tripled to right field with one out. Her line drive dropped just in front of a diving Kailyn Bearpaw and got to the wall. A single up the middle brought in the first run of the game. After a walk, both runners moved into scoring position on a fly out in the corner in right, and then an Alynah Torres double scored both to give the Sooners a 3-0 lead.
The score would remain that way until the bottom of the sixth inning. A walk followed by a throwing error on a hit back to the pitcher had two on with nobody out. A single down the line loaded the bases for first baseman Cydney Sanders, whose grand slam made it 7-0. A walk and hit batter got the walk-off run in scoring position, and then a one-out single brought in the game-ending run.
