IRVING, Texas — Following a perfect 4-0 showing in the Golden Hurricane's home victories over North Texas and Temple to wrap up the regular season, The University of Tulsa's Lily Hutchings has been named the American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, announced Tuesday by the league. It's the second career weekly accolade for the junior from Preston, England, who has been a stronghold for the Hurricane this season at the No. 1 doubles spot and the No. 3 singles position.
Hutchings went 2-0 in singles play and 2-0 in doubles action, including a ranked doubles win while reaching her 100th career individual victory for the Hurricane over the weekend. Against North Texas Friday, she claimed the third of Tulsa's four singles wins in a 6-0, 6-4 decision over Stacy Shulzhenko after dismantling Shulzhenko and Olivia Malm in doubles play with partner Maria Berlanga Bander for a 6-1 win.
In the regular season finale against Temple, Hutchings moved to 2-0 on the season against nationally ranked tandems when she helped take down the country's then-47th-ranked duo (Maiko Uchijima and Sam Nanere) in a hotly contested doubles match that ended in a 7-6 (8-6) tiebreaker win for Tulsa. She followed up with the second of four Hurricane singles wins as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 finish to move her singles record to 13-10 on the year.
The 10th-seeded Tulsa women will begin the AAC Women's Tennis Championship with a rematch against seven-seed No. 74 Wichita State in the second round of the tournament this Thursday, April 18, at 3 p.m. in Dallas.
