TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa men's tennis team went toe-to-toe with the American Athletic Conference's top-ranked team in the Memphis Tigers (No. 27) but came short of the win, falling 4-3 on the outdoor courts of the Michael D. Case Tennis Center Friday night. The Golden Hurricane dropped to 9-12, while the Tigers improved to 15-4.
Tulsa started off on the right foot by winning the doubles point to open the dual. After Memphis claimed the third position 6-3, senior Callum Gale and redshirt freshman Gus Tettamble responded with a 6-3 decision in the No. 2 slot followed by the doubles clinch in a 7-6 (7-4) decision by No. 38 Pierce Rollins and Timothy Carlsson Seger over No. 35 Pablo Alemany and Charlie Barry atop the lineup.
The Tigers responded with a straight-set win at No. 3 singles before Rollins fought to a 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) victory at the No. 1 position. The unranked Hurricane took advantage of a 5-0 lead in the first set and survived a back-and-forth second frame that the Tulsa native won in a 7-1 tiebreaker at six games all.
Memphis went up 3-2 after claiming Nos. 4 and 6, both in two sets. Tying up the dual match was freshman Alex Okonkwo in the fifth position. The Maidenhead, England, native went the distance with Juan Zabala, dropping the first set 6-3 before bouncing black to claim the second and third sets, capped off by a 10-8 tiebreaker set to equalize the match for Tulsa.
Though Tulsa fought valiantly, it wasn't enough as the Tigers' Conor Gannon would claim the No. 2 position in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, to seal away the 4-3 victory.
The Tulsa men will be back in action at home against South Florida (9-14) on Sunday, April 7, at noon.
