Maria Berlanga Bandera Named to AAC All-Conference Team

IRVING, Texas — University of Tulsa standout Maria Berlanga Bandera has been named to the American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis All-Conference Team, announced Wednesday by the league and voted on by head coaches. The junior from Málaga, Spain, is the 100th all-conference recipient in program history and brings home the team's 35th AAC all-conference award.
Berlanga led the way for a Golden Hurricane squad that has earned 11 wins on the year so far and a bid to the second-annual UTR Sports National Invitational Tennis (NIT) Championship (May 6-8). She holds team-leading overall records of 20-10 in singles and 16-13 in doubles across the fall and spring seasons. Berlanga was a mainstay at both No. 1 positions in dual-match action, going 13-7 atop the singles lineup and 12-8 in the doubles chart with partner Lily Hutchings.
A vocal leader on the courts, Berlanga has clinched the doubles point for Tulsa three times this year against Louisiana Tech, Memphis and Purdue and was the clinching point in TU's 4-1 decision at home over North Texas. She is also 2-0 against nationally ranked doubles tandems with wins against No. 45 Briana Crowley and Ava Hrastar of Ole Miss and No. 47 Maiko Uchijima and Sam Nanere of Temple.
Berlanga will lead Tulsa to battle in the NIT Championship when the No. 3 seed Hurricane takes on Wyoming in the Quarterfinal on Monday, May 6.
