Hershenow Wins Third Consecutive 10,000-Meter Title at AAC Outdoor Championships

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Senior Chloe Hershenow made history Friday as the first female Tulsa athlete to repeat as an individual conference champion for a third year in a row as the St. Louis product claimed the women's 10,000-meter title to open the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, scoring 10 of the Tulsa women's 15 team points to rank second in team standings while the men's team also finished second after day one with 20 points.

The Rice men's (37 points) and women's (20 points) squads lead the team standings after the first day of competition. On Friday, the Golden Hurricane enjoyed two finals qualifiers, two all-conference performances and one title winner. The action for TU picks back up Saturday at 6 p.m. with the women's 800-meter trial.

Women
In her championship performance in the 10,000-meters, Hershenow kept pace with the leading pack of runners for the first 24 laps of the race. She began to pull away in the final 50 meters of the 24th lap and zoomed out to a 50-meter lead within the first 100 meters of the final lap, leaving everyone in the dust to cruise to a 37:47.04 finish over 23 other athletes. Hershenow joins an elite group as Benjamin Preisner (2014-19) is the only other Tulsa track athlete to three-peat an AAC event, which was the men's indoor 5,000-meters from 2017-19. Hershenow's teammates Robyn Kowalski, a junior, and Tamara Reeves, a senior, placed sixth and seventh, respectively, to combine for Tulsa's remaining five points as top-10 finishers.

Senior Katharina Pesendorfer took care of business in the 1,500-meter run when she placed seventh in 4:31.91 to qualify as a top-12 finisher for Sunday's final.

Junior Lianne Holtermann ran against a tough crowd in the 400-meter hurdles to place 16th in 1:03.32. Eight competitors ahead of her set new season or personal bests, including the first-place runner who set the 85th fastest mark across the NCAA.

"Today was a really strong day led by an amazing run from Chloe," said Director of Track and Women's Head Coach Steve Gulley. "She loves this meet and has been such a crucial part of our success over the years. We probably hit on everything we needed to today, and we need to keep the momentum up tomorrow."

Men
The tradition of long-distance domination continues for Tulsa as four of the five Hurricane men in Friday morning's 10,000-meter placed in the top-10 to score points for TU. Redshirt Freshman Charlie Krasnoff, the reigning AAC Cross Country Freshman of the Year, paced Tulsa runners with a second-place mark of 30:42.38 for eight points. Redshirt sophomore Luke Lambert was the next Hurricane to finish with a fourth-place performance in 31:06.20 with freshman James Knockton (31:15.38) and redshirt-senior Shuaib Aljabaly (31:19.11) following in fifth and sixth place and senior Ben Black rounding out the contingent in 32:29.01 for 18th.

Senior Shay McEvoy was one of 12 athletes to qualify for the 1,500-meter final as the Kilkenny, Ireland, product took sixth in 3:51.30.

"We didn't have a lot today, but what we did have went really well," said Men's Head Coach Taylor Gulley. "Charlie led a really good team effort in the 10,000 meters and Shay ran a smooth, composed 1,500 trial run. We didn't bring a huge squad, but day one was everything we could've asked for."
