Tulsa Volleyball Announces 2024 Schedule
5/3/2024 3:26:00 PM | Volleyball
TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa volleyball team will play a 28-match regular season in 2024, announced Friday by second-year Head Coach Lauren Ramatowski. The schedule includes 12 non-conference matches and 16 American Athletic Conference contests with a total of 11 matches being played at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The conference is also bringing back a championship tournament for the first time since 2020 to be hosted by Wichita State Nov. 22-24.
The schedule pits the Golden Hurricane against 10 2023 postseason teams, including NCAA Tournament participants Baylor, Arkansas, Stephen F. Austin, Kansas and Purdue in the nonconference slate, while National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) squads from last season include league members South Florida, East Carolina, North Texas, Florida Atlantic and reigning NIVC champion Wichita State.
"We are very excited about our 2024 fall schedule!" said Ramatowski. "Our nonconference schedule is full of opportunities for us to compete and win, combined with challenges against some of the best in the country." We play in a very competitive American Athletic Conference, so we will look to build on our nonconference experience to play our best volleyball come league play. We are grateful to add a conference tournament to the end of our season, so we'll be working towards that the entire year to get an opportunity to compete for a championship."
Nonconference Schedule
Tulsa opens the season at the Baylor Classic on Aug. 30, facing Baylor and Campbell. Baylor reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, finishing No. 23 in the final AVCA poll.
A week later, the Hurricane plays Missouri State in a non-tournament road contest on Sept. 4. Then, Tulsa will head across town for the Oral Roberts Volleyball Classic (Sept. 6-7) to face the hosting Golden Eagles and Sam Houston on Friday and Bethune Cookman on Saturday.
For the Tulsa Volleyball Invitational, the Hurricane will welcome Arkansas on Thursday, Sept. 12, and Stephen F. Austin and Oklahoma on Friday, Sept. 13. TU will be looking for revenge against these teams after falling on the road to each of them last year. The Razorbacks, who took down SFA in the NCAA First Round and made it all the way to the Quarterfinal, finished last season ranked No. 8 in the nation.
Tulsa closes out the tournament portion of the schedule at the Kansas Invite, Sept. 20-21. The Hurricane will face Kansas on Friday and will close out nonconference action against Purdue on Saturday. The Boilermakers (NCAA Third Round) and Jayhawks (NCAA Second Round) and were ranked No. 13 and 17, respectively, in the final national rankings.
The American Schedule
The 16-match American Athletic Conference schedule has Tulsa facing four opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, including UAB, UTSA, Wichita State and Memphis. The Hurricane will take on remaining league opponents in single matches, including Temple, Rice, Florida Atlantic and South Florida at home, and Tulane, North Texas, East Carolina and Charlotte on the road.
Tulsa begins the AAC schedule with a road trip to Birmingham, Ala., to take on the UAB Blazers on Friday, Sept. 27. A home match against the Temple Owls on Sunday, Sept. 29 will wrap up the September slate for the Hurricane.
October begins with a home contest against Rice on Friday, Oct. 4, and a road tilt at Tulane slated for Sunday, Oct. 6. The Hurricane will return home the following week to take on Florida Atlantic (Oct. 11) and South Florida (Oct. 13), who reached the semifinal round of the NIVC last season. TU will follow up with a two-match road stretch at North Texas (10/18) and UTSA (10/20) before concluding October with home matches against UAB on Friday, Oct. 25, and Memphis on Sunday, Oct. 27.
A weekend series against longtime rival Wichita State will kick off the final month of regular season action for Tulsa. The Hurricane will host the Shockers first on Friday, Nov. 1, before heading to Wichita for match two on Sunday, Nov. 3. From there, TU will remain on the road to take on East Carolina (Nov. 8) and Charlotte (Nov. 10) before flying back for the home finale against UTSA on Friday, Nov. 15, and leaving for Memphis for the regular-season finale on Sunday, Nov. 17.
Conference action will conclude with the 2024 American Athletic Conference Championship. The eight-seed tournament, determined by conference standings, will run from Nov. 22-24 in the Charles Koch Arena at Wichita State. The tournament winner will receive the automatic bid for the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
