BRADENTON, Fla. — The third-seeded Tulsa women's tennis team served a 4-0 shutout over No. 6 Wyoming (16-11) in the NIT Championship Quarterfinal Monday after securing the doubles point and earning decisive wins from the bottom half of the singles lineup. The Golden Hurricane evens its overall record at 12-12 and will face the winner of No. 2 West Virginia-No. 7 Pacific in the semifinals Tuesday with a not-before start time of 3:30 p.m. (CT).
Tulsa grabs its second victory over Wyoming this season after winning a 5-2 indoor meeting on Jan. 14.
Wyoming started doubles play with a court advantage over the Hurricane after taking the No. 2 spot in a 6-1 decision. The remaining Tulsa duos remained unphased as the freshman pair of Erin McKenzie and Tayla Wilmot claimed the three-spot 6-3 and the usual junior duo Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings prevailed 6-4 atop the lineup to clinch the opening score for TU.
All three of Tulsa's singles winners needed only two sets to take down their Cowgirl opponents, starting with Wilmot in the No. 6 position. The Johannesburg, South Africa, product cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 finish over Lucia Malinak. Wilmot won eight games in a row before Malinak finally got on the board. Wilmot now stands at 10-6 on the year and is 6-3 in her last 10 matches.
The next score came from McKenzie in the No. 5 slot against Adel Ismagulova. McKenzie, also from Johannesburg, took advantage of a nine-game win streak to start her match 6-0, 3-0 before closing out the second set at 6-2 to earn Tulsa's third team point.
Clinching and ending the day's action in Florida was junior Ana Naranjo Martinez at No. 4 Singles. Naranjo enjoyed a quick 6-4, 6-1 straight-set victory over Nikol Dobrilova in one hour and 12 minutes. Naranjo, now 17-11 and 12-8 in dual matches, notched two services aces and benefitted from six double-faults by Dobrilova.
