Late Penalty Caps Tulsa Comeback in 3-2 Thriller
9/1/2024 10:43:00 PM | Men's Soccer
TULSA, Okla. – Trailing twice on Sunday evening, the University of Tulsa men's soccer team kept battling and took down Cal Poly 3-2 on a late penalty from graduate transfer Ander Bengoetxea.
The Golden Hurricane (1-2-0) picked up its first win of the season after two tightly contested losses. The Mustangs (0-3-1) are still seeking their first victory of the season, after failing to hold onto 1-0 and 2-1 leads.
Bengoetxea made his Tulsa debut in the 75th minute, entering the match for Will Applegate. Just 12 minutes later he stepped up to take a spot kick after a VAR review gave Tulsa its second penalty of the evening. The Vitoria, Spain native stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way, placing the ball into the bottom right corner as the Tulsa crowd and bench erupted.
Two of Tulsa's goals were scored by substitutes. Camilo Vargas scored TU's first goal of the game to equalize in the first half and Bengoetxea added the second substitute goal. Alvaro Torrijos had the Hurricane's other goal.
True freshman Carlito Saylon was between the sticks on Sunday, logging all 90 minutes and coming up with a pair of crucial saves.
How it Happened
For the third time in as many games, it was the visitors who scored first. Conner Lisenbee got on the end of an Oren Stuppel pass into the right side of the box and hammered a volley home for Cal Poly's first goal of the game and season in the 23rd minute.
Almost 14 minutes later, Tulsa got right back in the game. Freshman Ian Belong battle with two Cal Poly defenders in the attacking third on the nearside boundary. He was able to poke a pass by the pair of them and found Will Edwards, who took it down the right flank and drove a hard cross into the box. Vargas sprinted by the defense and placed a right-footed shoot on his first touch past the diving goalie into the bottom right corner to even the score.
The Mustangs didn't take long to strike back. In the 38th, Ashton Alonge picked up a pass 25 yards outside the box and drove in toward goal past three Tulsa defenders before placing ball past Saylon to reestablish a lead 2-1, which Cal Poly would bring to the break.
Ian Belong found himself with an opportunity early in the 62nd minute of the game, firing off the post and out of play. However, the referee went to the monitor and came back to give a penalty, judging that Parker Owens had recklessly challenged Belong on the shot. Torrijos stepped up and leveled the score at 2.
Both teams had opportunities in the remainder of the half, but it seemed as if the teams might be headed for a draw as the game entered the final minutes. That was until a Tulsa cross was knocked down by the arm of a Mustang defender outside the box in the 88th minute. Once again, the referee was called to the monitor where it was decided the handball occurred inside the box, giving TU its second penalty kick of the match. Bengoetxea, who had recently subbed on for his debut, slotted home the game winner.
