TULSA, Okla. –– After picking up its first win of the season in a comeback thriller over Cal Poly, the University of Tulsa men's soccer team will look to grab its first road win of the campaign when the Golden Hurricane takes on Missouri State on Friday evening.
Kickoff in the Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium is set for 7 p.m. in a match that will air on ESPN+.
Fans unable to attend the action in person can subscribe to ESPN+ to watch select Golden Hurricane soccer, football, tennis, volleyball, soccer, softball and basketball games. Tulsa (1-2-0) scored a pair of second half penalties to complete the comeback against the Mustangs on Sunday, ending a two-game slide to start the season. Ander Bengoetxea slotted home the winner with only a few minutes remaining to boost the Hurricane to the win.
All four of Tulsa's goals this season have come from different players. Wes Bottenburg scored the season's first goal, and then Camilo Vargas, Alvaro Torrijos and Bangoetxea found the net on Sunday. As the Hurricane begins to find its goalscoring rhythm, TU has done a good job of creating chances. Tulsa averages 6.33 shots on goal per game, and more than 50 percent of the team's efforts have been on target, which ranks 54th and 30th in the nation, respectively.
Freshman Ian Belong came inches away from scoring against Louisville but settled for an assist instead. He picked up his second assist on Sunday, which places him 33rd in the country and third in the conference behind a pair of players from FAU and Charlotte.
Missouri State (1-2-0) will attempt to get back in the win column after a disappointing 3-2 home loss to Kansas City on Monday evening. The Bears had not lost to the Roos since 2010, and it was only the second home loss in the series for MSU, with the other coming in 1995.
Senior Jesus Barea is the man to watch in the Missouri State attack, scoring five of the team's six goals this season. He's had a brace in back-to-back matches and found the net in all three games. He's fourth in the nation for goals and is not shy to take a shot, leading the country in both shots per game (6.33) and shots on goal per game (4.33).
Friday marks the 48th meeting in a series Tulsa leads 30-13-4. The two met in Tulsa last season and finished in a 1-1 draw after battling each other and the poor weather.
Following Friday's match, Tulsa will return home for another rivalry game. The Hurricane hosts Oral Roberts in the Hurricane Soccer Stadium on Tuesday evening. The game will kick at 7 p.m. and air on ESPN+.
