Tulsa Battles to 2-2 Draw in Mayor’s Cup
9/10/2024 11:10:00 PM | Men's Soccer
TULSA, Okla. – First Golden Hurricane goals from Gyuwon Chong and Clement Badger helped Tulsa overcome a pair of deficits to draw with crosstown rivals Oral Roberts 2-2 in the 2024 Mayor's Cup on Tuesday evening in Hurricane Stadium.
Tulsa (1-3-1) picked up its first draw of the season, while ORU (2-2-2) tied for the second time this season.
The Golden Eagles struck first shortly before halftime with the game's opening goal, an individual effort from Luis Flores. Gyuwon Chong scored his first goal of his TU career in the 56th minute, following the shot from Camilo Vargas, heading the ball into the right upper 90.
The visitors retook the lead with a penalty in the 60th and attempted to close out the game. With time running out, Clement Badger got on the end of a cross and battled through his first effort getting saved off the line to blast a second attempt into the roof of the net for the equalizer, which would count as the final tally.
Tulsa outshot ORU 15-7 on the night and 6-5 in shots on target. Carlito Saylon was between the posts for TU on Tuesday, making three saves, including a diving effort right at 66 minutes to deny a shot headed for the lower corner of the goal. Jakub Grzesiak was his counterpart on the other side. The ORU goalkeeper also made three saves and denied Alvaro Torrijos a goal early in the opening half.
Vargas led Tulsa with three shots in the game. His headed attempt while jumping backward in the second half led to Chong's equalizer. Badger had two shots, both on target and both in the same sequence of events. Flores led ORU with three shots, two that found the net.
How it Happened
Tulsa came out as the aggressor in the opening half. Just under 10 minutes in, Alvaro Torrijos picked up a loose ball at the top of the box and unleashed a shot headed to the corner, which took a nice save from the ORU goalkeeper to keep out.
Near the end of the opening half, ORU's Luis Flores went down after being challenged by the Tulsa goalkeeper. The referee was called to the monitor, but after looking at the replay decided the attacker initiated the contact and waived play to continue.
After the review, it seemed the half was destined to end scoreless. Flores and the Golden Eagles had other ideas. Flores picked up an ill-advised ball passed backward toward the Tulsa goal, cut inside to beat the keeper and slotted home the game's opener with just 1:49 remaining in the opening period.
The Hurricane, no stranger to playing from behind this season, kept putting pressure on the ORU defense and it finally paid off with a corner just 10 minutes into the second half. Tracking back on the in-swinging corner, it was Camilo Vargas who got the first shot, heading it toward goal. Jakub Grzesiak did a great job to keep the shot out, but Gyuwon Chong was first to the rebound, meeting the ball on its way down and heading it in the corner to equalize at one.
Tulsa's celebrations didn't last long, as ORU earned a penalty kick in the 61st minute following a VAR review for a handball in the box. The referee pointed to the spot after a minute at the monitor, and Flores smashed a shot to the right side of the goal for a brace.
The game opened up again, with hard tackles, good opportunities and the occasional close call. Carlito Saylon went full stretch to direct an ORU shot wide four minutes after the second goal, giving Tulsa a chance.
In the 87th, TU earned another corner, and again a little bit of set piece magic went Tulsa's way. This time, the corner came from the far side, swinging out away from goal. Clement Badger was able to get a shot off, but his effort was saved off the line by an ORU defender as Badger and another defender fell to the turf. The ball bounced back toward the pair on the ground and the junior transfer beat the opponent to the free ball and smashed it above the goalkeeper with his left foot to make it 2-2.
Tulsa had a shot go wide right in the 89th minute, but that would be all for excitement as the game ended all square.
