Turnovers in Defensive Third Prove Costly in Tulsa 3-0 loss at Creighton

9/14/2024 8:25:00 PM | Men's Soccer

OMAHA, Neb. – The Golden Hurricane conceded multiple goals in the first half off unforced turnovers in a 3-0 loss at Creighton on Saturday night.

Tulsa (1-4-1) allowed a goal less than a minute into the match after a pass from goalkeeper Carlito Saylon was miscontrolled, and the Bluejays capitalized to take a 1-0 lead.

Less than six minutes later, a TU defender attempted to head a bouncing ball back to Saylon, but it didn't have the pace to get there as a Creighton attacker got there first, rounded the Saylon and put the Bluejays ahead 2-0.

Creighton added a third in the 28th minute after a nice passage of possession. A cross from the left was met first time with a left-footed volley to go up 3-0.

No goals would be scored in the second half, despite more efforts from the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa outshot the Bluejays 11-10, but the hosts were on target in six of their efforts versus three from TU.

How it Happened
As it were, the game winner was scored in the opening minute. Creighton pounced on a pass out of the back that wasn't properly controlled and scored to go ahead 1-0 just 48.1 seconds into the match.

Yuki Sekiguchi came close to equalizing for the Hurricane a few minutes later, beating a defender on the left wing and from a tight angle aimed for the lower left corner, but was denied by a nice save. Tulsa would not have another shot on target until a Will Applegate sharp effort that was saved right at 74 minutes.

Creighton doubled its lead in the eighth minute. The Hurricane attempted to head a bouncing ball back to Carlito Saylon in goal, however the ball did not have the power to get to its destination and was intercepted by Creighton's Jackson Castro, who took a touch to create an angle around Saylon and scored the second goal of the night.

The third goal came in the 28th minute. Ryusei Shimoni received a pass from Castro following a quick free kick, got into the box and had the space to lift a cross through the box. Edward Morales met the pass with his left foot on a first-time volley and hammered the ball home for the 3-0 advantage.

Tulsa had seven shots in the second half, but neither team added to the goal tally.
