Delanie Crawford Becomes Tulsa’s All-Time 3-Point Shooter in Road Loss to UTSA
1/22/2025 9:38:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Senior guard Delanie Crawford etched her name in the Tulsa history books Wednesday after setting the new all-time career 3-point record. In her 111th game for the Golden Hurricane, she made three triples in a 64-53 loss at UTSA to move to 235 made threes in her illustrious career, passing the previous record of 233 set by Kelsee Grovey (2012-16).
Crawford, a native of Piedmont, Okla., needed just two threes to set the record, and she did so at the 5:51 mark in the second quarter.
The loss Wednesday dropped the Hurricane to 9-10 on the year and 3-4 in American Athletic Conference play, while UTSA remains undefeated in AAC action at 8-0, improving to 17-2 overall on the season.
Tulsa fell by as much as 13 points but fought back to cut the deficit to four on multiple occasions down the stretch. Unfortunately, UTSA had answers for most of the Hurricane's successes on the floor.
The Roadrunners showed why they have the top scoring defense of the league (55.7 points per game) after out-rebounding Tulsa 44-30, which led to 20 second-chance points for the Roadrunners. They also added eight steals and six blocks compared to Tulsa's seven steals and five rejections.
Neither team shot above 40% with Tulsa going 38.5% from the field and UTSA 39.1%. Although Tulsa led by as much as seven at 11-4 with 7:14, the early momentum wasn't enough to keep Tulsa on top.
Crawford led all Tulsa scorers with 17 points, while junior Hadley Periman finished with nine boards and sophomore Elise Hill led with three assists.
"I felt like our team showed a ton of heart and fight tonight," said Head Coach Angie Nelp. "You saw us get in these scoring droughts and give up an offensive rebound, but you saw us fight back and find a way to bring it to within a couple of possessions. I do believe our team is going to take this game and learn from it together. UTSA is a very good team and well coached. You can't make those mistakes, giving up an offensive rebound or a turnover, but they are just too good on the other end."
UTSA was led by Nine De Leon Negron who had 19 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Tulsa held the No. 1 scorer in the AAC Jordyn Jenkins to just seven points on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST QUARTER . . .
Delanie Crawford got things started with a turnaround jumper at the perimeter. Elise Hill knocked away the first 3-pointer of the night and saw Crawford swish her first triple of the night at 8:17, tying the TU career 3-pointer record.
After Hadley Periman made her first three, UTSA used a nine-point run to take a 13-11 lead before the first media break.
TU's scoring drought would continue for over five minutes until Kennedi Alexander pulled up for a mid-range jump at 2:09, tying the ballgame at 13-13.
Crawford gave TU a brief 15-13 lead before back-to-back 2-point plays by the Roadrunners gave UTSA the 17-15 advantage at the end of the quarter.
IN THE SECOND QUARTER . . .
UTSA opened the second quarter with an 8-3 run, forcing an early timeout by the Hurricane at 7:04. Jade Clack was the only one to score for Tulsa in the first three minutes on a wide open trey.
Tulsa went 0-for-4 on the next four possessions that caused a nearly four-minute scoring drought. Snapping the streak was Delanie Crawford, who made her 234th career 3-pointer at the 4:54 mark of the second quarter. It was an unassisted shot that went straight through the net.
Kristol Ayson made a fast break free throw at 3:36 and UTSA converted an and-1 over a minute later. Crawford added one more 3-pointer for good measure to close out the first half with the Roadrunners leading 28-25.
At halftime, Tulsa was shooting 33.3% from the field (9-27), 35.3% in triples (6-17) and 50% from the line (1-2). UTSA was shooting 30.8% in field goals (12-39), including 18.8% from deep (3-16), and 50% from the line (1-2).
IN THE THIRD QUARTER . . .
Lexie Foutch in her fifth start of the season opened the second half with a 3-pointer but UTSA answered with a mid-range jumper from Nina De Leon Negron, who added trey on the following possession after Hadley Periman made her second basket of the night.
The Roadrunners went up by five at 35-50 when Idara Udo plowed through a TU defender on a layup at 6:51. It was part of an 8-0 scoring run that stopped when Mady Cartwright drew a shooting foul and went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe, making it a 38-32 ballgame.
UTSA benefitted from another scoring run, this time a seven-point streak to pull ahead 45-32 and force a Tulsa timeout with 4:05 to play in the third. The Roadrunners' defense continued to stifle the Hurricane offense, holding Tulsa without a field goal for over four minutes until Delanie Crawford fielded an in-bound pass at the key and swished the mid-ranger.
Kristol Ayson tacked on a layup to answer a UTSA layup in the paint. Lexie Foutch found Mady Cartwright underneath for an easy layup the following possession, cutting the deficit to nine at 47-38 for TU's third straight basket.
Foutch went up for the team's fourth consecutive bucket from Elise Hill, who tacked on a layup from a stolen ball under the rim at 30 seconds. It was the 10th point of a 10-0 scoring run, putting the game at 47-44 UTSA with 10 minutes to go.
IN THE FOURTH QUARTER . . .
UTSA began the fourth frame with six unanswered points from Idara Udo and Nine De Leon Negron.
Delanie Crawford scored TU's first points of the quarter on a jump shot within the paint at 5:28. Jade Clack followed with a layup. Then, Lexie Foutch answered a UTSA layup with her second made three of the day, putting her at a career-high eight points. UTSA would call timeout up four points at 55-51 with 4:13 reading the clock.
UTSA benefitted from the break, getting away with an open layup to make it a six-point game. The Roadrunners put up another 2-point play to go up 59-51 to force Tulsa's third timeout at 2:49.
After Mady Cartwright scored her eighth point of the night on a layup, UTSA drew a foul and converted the and-1 at 1:13, moving ahead by nine at 62-53. After Tulsa missed two second-chance field goals on its next possession, the deficit was too much to overcome in the little time that was left as UTSA made all its free throws when the Hurricane started fouling. The final score was 64-53.
