Okonkwo Secures Tulsa’s 4-3 Comeback Over Oregon in ITA Kickoff Consolation

NORMAN, Okla. — The Tulsa men's tennis team earned its third 4-3 win of the young season after the Golden Hurricane fought back from down 3-1 against Oregon (1-2) Sunday in the consolation round of ITA Kickoff Weekend in Norman. This time, it was Alex Okonkwo who clinched the team win for TU.

Doubles play proved to be vital as the opening advantage came down to sophomore Calum Jestin and redshirt junior Will Pellegrini in the No. 3 position after Tulsa won the first position 6-2. The pair finished on top, 6-4, to clinch the point, leaving sophomore Gus Tettamble and junior Luis Felip Miguel unfinished at Doubles No. 2.

Oregon wouldn't go down without a fight as the Ducks claimed the bottom half of the singles matches in straight sets, going up 3-1 on the Hurricane.

It was the top three positions that saved the day for Tulsa as Miguel followed by junior Timothy Carlsson Seger closed out 7-5, 6-4 winners in the second and third lines, respectively, to knot up the dual match at 3-3.

Okonkwo was the only player to reach a third set on the day after falling 6-1 in the first set and answering with a 6-1 win in the second frame. In the deciding stanza, his opponent Lenn Luemkemann forced a tiebreaker set at six games all, but Okonkwo kept his cool and cruised to the 7-3 tiebreaker win to secure Tulsa's third team victory of the season.

The Tulsa men will remain on the road to take on a pair of Alabama teams, starting with No. 19 Alabama (3-0) on Friday, Jan. 31, at 4 p.m. and Auburn (2-2) on Sunday, Feb. 2, at noon central.
