Two Singles Players, Two Doubles Pairs Advance on First Day of ITA Central Regional Championships

NORMAN, Okla. — Tulsa women's tennis wrapped up the opening rounds of play at the ITA Central Regional Championships on Thursday, highlighted by strong singles performances from Erin McKenzie, Alice Baba, and Carolina Alonso, as well as successful doubles showings from two Hurricane pairs advancing to the next round.

In singles action, Baba opened her tournament with a hard-fought three-set victory over Missouri State's Matilde Ercoli, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, before falling in the second round to top-seeded Tiziana Rossini from Nebraska, 4-6, 5-7.

Saniya Singh dropped a close first-round matchup to Kansas City's Amal Gati, 5-7, 5-7, while Maria Santos earned a three-set win against Oral Roberts' Ava Goodell, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, before being edged by Kansas's Anna Putilina, 5-7, 4-6.

McKenzie impressed with back-to-back straight-set victories, winning 6-2, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the next round. Alonso also advanced to the main draw after winning both of her qualifying matches, defeating Missouri's Julie Bedard, 6-4, 6-3, and Arkansas State's Sarah Millard, 6-2, 6-3.

In other action, Uta Asakura fell to Missouri's Gian Octa, 6-3, 6-0, Coral Valle was edged by Minnesota's Sofia Pinto in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 4-6, and Lilitha Ndungane lost to ninth-seeded Tatyana Nikolenko from Wichita State, 2-6, 0-6.

Where the singles bracket began with a qualifying round, doubles play opened directly in the main draw. Tayla Wilmot and Isabella Basson fell to a pair from Minnesota, 5-8, while Valle and Asakura lost to a duo from Arkansas State, 3-8. Baba and Santos also dropped their first-round match to a pair from Wichita State, 4-8.

Two Tulsa teams advanced to the round of 32, as Ndungane and McKenzie defeated a pair from Arkansas State in a tiebreaker, 8(7)-7(4), and Singh and Alonso earned an 8-2 win over Kansas City.

The Golden Hurricane players still in action will return to the court tomorrow to continue play in the main draw of the ITA Central Regional Championships.
