TU Dominates UTSA, Sweeps Season Series with Roadrunners

10/26/2025 3:31:00 PM | Volleyball

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa (18-4, 8-2 American) dominated University of Texas at San Antonio (11-10, 4-6 American) with a straight-set victory, 25-16, 25-18, 25-10, on Sunday in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

Tulsa's potent offense was led by a season-high attack percentage of .451, complemented by 48 kills. The defense was equally strong, posting 43 digs and 8 total blocks. The Roadrunners struggled offensively, managing a hitting percentage of just .096.

"Everyone on this team can play anywhere on the floor," said Ava Steffe, who led the Golden Hurricane with .625 hitting in her first game back from injury. "When injury happens, it's so important that we're able to fill in those roles, because everybody on this team is so good at volleyball. We continue to out-team other programs, and that's what's special about us."

Steffe had appeared in only 13 sets across five matches played before Sunday's match. The true freshman from Frisco, Texas, enjoyed a career-best 10 kills, five of which came in the first set alone.

Tulsa started the match with a strong performance, quickly taking control with a 4-0 lead, featuring kills from Brayden Hipp and Lauren Eitler. UTSA responded with a couple of points, including a kill by Gigi Mason, but Tulsa extended their lead to 11-3 with contributions from Ava Steffe and Jill Hanson. The home team maintained their momentum through the set, as Maegan Mills added a kill to put Tulsa ahead 19-8. Despite a brief UTSA surge, including a service ace from Taylor Gaines, Tulsa closed out the set decisively at 25-16 with Mills securing the final point.

In the second set, Tulsa capitalized on UTSA's attack errors to establish an early 4-0 lead, with Ava Steffe contributing a key kill. UTSA fought back to narrow the gap to 4-2, but Tulsa maintained their advantage, aided by a service ace from the team and multiple kills from Jill Hanson. Despite a late effort from the Roadrunners, with Ally Tribe and Gigi Mason each securing kills, Tulsa stayed in control. The set concluded with a decisive kill by Steffe, sealing a 25-18 victory for the home team.

Tulsa secured a commanding victory in the third set against UTSA, concluding with a 25-10 score. Steffe led a key scoring run early, contributing three consecutive points between kills and a block, bringing Tulsa to an 8-2 advantage. Mills and Kat Cooper further expanded the lead with timely kills, assisted by Hipp, as Tulsa pulled away to a 16-4 lead. Despite a couple of service errors, Tulsa maintained control, with Hanson delivering the final kill to seal the set at 25-10.

TU will hit the road next week to take on first-place South Florida on Friday, October 31, at 5 p.m., followed by a road tilt at Florida Atlantic on Sunday, November 2, at 12 p.m.
