Tulsa Falls to First-Place South Florida in Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. — Tulsa (18-5, 8-3 American) fell to first-place South Florida (14-8, 10-1 American) in straight sets Friday at The USF Corral in Tampa, with scores of 18-25, 16-25, 19-25. South Florida recorded a .354 hitting percentage, surpassing Tulsa's .167 mark to take the match in straight sets. Senior setter Brayden Hipp also surpassed 2,000 career assists and needs just 12 more digs to reach 1,000 digs.
Tulsa and South Florida opened the first set with a back-and-forth exchange, keeping the score tight initially. The Golden Hurricane's Brayden Hipp and Jill Hanson contributed early kills, while the Bulls' Maria Clara Andrade and Laila Ivey responded with their own. The set featured several service errors from both sides, but USF capitalized on a series of Tulsa errors to pull ahead. Key plays included a service ace by Imani Hartfield for the Bulls and a kill by Arianna Beckham to extend their lead. South Florida closed the set with a decisive 25-18 win, highlighted by a service ace from Miya Thomas and a final kill by Iyanna Garvin.
Tulsa and South Florida engaged in a closely contested set until the Bulls established a decisive run. Andrade initiated scoring with a kill assisted by Raegan Richardson, setting an early tone. Tulsa responded with Maegan Mills' kill and capitalized on Andrade's errors to briefly lead 3-1. However, the Bulls countered with Ivey's kill and an ace to regain momentum, tying the score at 3-3. The set saw frequent ties and lead changes, with Tulsa's Hanson contributing key kills to keep the score close at 8-8. Despite Tulsa's efforts, the Bulls pulled away with a series of kills from Andrade and Beckham, assisted by Richardson, extending their lead to 23-16. Andrade sealed the set for the Bulls with a final kill, concluding the set at 25-16.
In the third set, Andrade's performance was pivotal for South Florida, starting with an early kill from Richardson's assist to gain a 1-0 lead. Despite Tulsa's efforts, including Olivia Vance and Kat Cooper contributing crucial kills, South Florida maintained control. Andrade further extended the lead to 6-4 with another kill. Tulsa struggled with errors, allowing South Florida to capitalize, reaching a 12-6 advantage. Although Tulsa narrowed the gap with Vance and Hanson securing points, Andrade and Ivey sealed the set for South Florida at 25-19 with consecutive kills from Richardson's assists.
Tulsa's next match will take place against Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla., at noon on Sunday, November 2.
