Tulsa Dominates Wichita State in Home Sweep

10/5/2025 3:28:00 PM | Volleyball

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa (13-3, 3-1 American) swept Wichita State (10-6, 2-2 American) in straight sets, 28-26, 25-18, 25-20, in front of 722 fans and the Sound of the Golden Hurricane band Sunday afternoon in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

Tulsa's .294 team hitting percentage helped propel the Golden Hurricane to their second win over the Shockers this season. The last time TU defeated Wichita State at least twice in a single season was 1980.

"This team and coaching staff are so amazing," said Olivia Vance, who had 10 blocks, eight kills (.350), and four digs on the day. "They have made me grow so much as a person and player. They've helped me become a leader on this team. I want to help this team win and make history doing so."

The first set opened with Tulsa and Wichita State exchanging points as both teams sought to establish an early lead. Tulsa's Maegan Mills secured consecutive kills, helping the Golden Hurricane to an early 3-1 advantage. The Shockers responded with a series of attacks, including a service ace by Maddie Wilson, to tie the score at 3-3. As the set progressed, Vance made key contributions, including back-to-back blocks against Sydney Dunning to tie the match at 24-24. The set concluded with Tulsa edging out Wichita State 28-26, thanks to a final attack error by Jenna Cubbage, blocked by Vance.

Tulsa secured a 25-18 victory in the second set against the Shockers, utilizing a combination of strong defense and timely scoring. Early on, Tulsa built momentum with a service ace from Brayden Hipp and a series of blocks by Vance and Jill Hanson, taking an 8-4 lead. The Shockers responded with kills from Maddie Wilson and Sydney Dunning, narrowing the gap to 8-7. Kat Cooper and Lauren Eitler played pivotal roles in extending Tulsa's lead, each contributing multiple kills. Tulsa's defensive efforts were highlighted by consecutive blocks by Cooper, sealing the set with an attack error by Brooklyn Leggett.

Tulsa secured the third set with a 25-20 victory over Wichita State. The home team capitalized on several attack errors by Jenna Cubbage, with Vance and Hanson contributing blocks to contain the opposition. Tulsa's offense was spearheaded by Hipp, who assisted on multiple kills, including those by Vance and Cooper. The Shockers managed to keep the score competitive, with Brooklyn Leggett leading the visitors' attack, but a service error at a crucial moment shifted momentum back to Tulsa, culminating in a decisive kill by Beth Bayless to close the set.

Looking ahead, Tulsa will host UAB on Friday, October 10, at 6 p.m., and host Memphis on Sunday, October 12, at 1 p.m.
