
Efficient Hitting Leads Golden Hurricane to Home Sweep over UAB

TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa volleyball squad (14-3, 4-1 American) swept UAB (7-10, 0-5 American) in straight sets with scores of 25-22, 25-19, 25-18 Friday evening in the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The Golden Hurricane have now won 14 of their last 15 matches this season and have emerged victorious in 17 of their last 22 outings dating back to the end of last season.
Tulsa's offense was led by a strong attack percentage of .369 through three sets, while the Blazers struggled in the third set with a hitting percentage of -.034 to finish at .212 on the night. Tulsa Head Coach Lauren Ramatowski also picked up her 50th win leading the Golden Hurricane.
"I just feel like our whole team comes together," said Kat Cooper, who led TU with 12 kills on 18 swings for a .611 hitting night. "We were really gelled together, everybody was working together, and everything felt smooth.
"Our mindset is the same every single match. Every match we play sets us up with an opportunity to compete for a conference championship. We know that we have to play with intensity and as a unit."
The first set between the Golden Hurricane and the Blazers started with Tulsa gaining an early point from an Olivia Vance kill assisted by Brayden Hipp. A back-and-forth battle ensued, with UAB briefly holding a lead through key plays by Jorda Crook and Mia Reese, both contributing multiple kills. Tulsa's Beth Bayless and Jill Hanson responded by generating crucial points to keep the score tight. Late in the set, Olivia Vance and Kat Cooper delivered decisive kills, with Cooper's final kill concluding the set at 25-22 in favor of the home team. Hipp was instrumental, assisting on numerous critical points throughout the set to finish with 20 first-set assists.
Tulsa secured a 25-19 victory in the second set, showcasing a strong offensive performance. Vance and Cooper were instrumental, with Vance opening the set with a kill, assisted by Lauren Patterson. Vance later delivered the final point with a kill set up by Hipp. The Golden Hurricane capitalized on several UAB errors, including a service error late in the set, which helped extend their lead. UAB's Reese and Abby Jones contributed kills during the set, but Tulsa maintained the momentum needed to close it out.
In the third set, Tulsa showcased precise attacks and capitalized on the Blazers' errors to secure a 25-18 victory. The set saw a standout performance from Hipp, who contributed significantly with assists, including a setup for Vance's kill to tie early at 2-2. The Golden Hurricane maintained the edge with a service ace from Brittany Bacorn at 6-3 and a block by Cooper and Hipp at 9-4. UAB responded with a brief rally, narrowing the gap to 17-15 with Crook's kill. Nonetheless, Tulsa pulled away with Bayless adding two key kills during a decisive run to 20-15. The set concluded with a service ace by Hipp, sealing the win.
Looking ahead, Tulsa prepares to host Memphis on Sunday, October 12, at 1 p.m.

The Tulsa Volleyball team is looking for ball kids for the 2025 season. Ball kids and one accompanying parent or guardian will receive free admission for games they sign up for. Ball kids will retrieve balls that go out of bounds on the sidelines for the entire game and provide a fresh ball for servers. Only ages 10-12 are allowed to participate.
