Tulsa Becomes First American Team to 15 Wins After 3-0 Sweep over Memphis

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa (15-3, 5-1 American) achieved a commanding 3-0 victory over Memphis (9-11, 1-5 American) at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Sunday afternoon, with set scores of 25-15, 25-15, 25-13. The Golden Hurricane are the first team in the American Conference to reach 15 wins this season and sit atop conference standings in a three-way tie for first place with a 5-1 conference record.
For the second time this weekend, Tulsa's offense was led by efficient attacks, posting a .337 hitting percentage overall.
The first set between the Golden Hurricane and the Tigers began with both teams exchanging early points until Tulsa took control. After Memphis tied the score at 3-3, Tulsa orchestrated a 6-0 run, highlighted by two kills from Olivia Vance and an ace from Brayden Hipp, bringing the score to 9-3. Memphis momentarily halted Tulsa's momentum with a kill by Brianna Washington, but Tulsa quickly regained control with Jill Hanson and Vance each contributing multiple kills. Despite a late push by the Tigers, including two service aces from Riley McCloskey, Tulsa maintained its lead. The set concluded at 25-15, with Vance delivering the final kill off an assist from Hipp.
Tulsa secured a commanding second set win over Memphis, 25-15, highlighted by a series of strategic plays and Tigers' errors. Lauren Eitler led Tulsa's offensive with multiple kills, contributing significantly to a mid-set surge that brought the score to 11-7. Tulsa capitalized on Memphis' service errors and attack errors, including a pivotal service ace from Quinn Swofford as the set approached its conclusion. The set was capped by a kill from Kylee McCoy, solidifying the Golden Hurricane's stronghold in the match.
Tulsa secured a decisive 25-13 victory in the third set against the Tigers, highlighted by a strong mid-set run. After a back-and-forth start, including a service ace from Lauren Patterson and a kill by Eitler, Tulsa gained momentum with Vance and Kat Cooper combining for a crucial block to tie the score at 6-6. Hipp's offensive contributions were significant, as she notched multiple kills, including one at 12-9 and another at 16-9, extending Tulsa's lead. Hanson and Eitler contributed defensively with key blocks, while Meg Goodwin delivered the final service ace to clinch the set.
Up next for TU is a rematch with the Tigers on Friday, October 17, at 7 p.m. in Memphis. Tulsa will then remain on the road to face UAB on Sunday, October 19, at 1 p.m. Both matches will air on ESPN+.

Ball kids will retrieve balls that go out of bounds on the sidelines for the entire game and provide a fresh ball for servers. Only ages 10-12 are allowed to participate.
