IRVING, Texas — Four Golden Hurricane volleyball players earned American Conference honors this week after two excellent wins over Wichita State this past weekend. Brayden Hipp coordinated an unstoppable offense to earn Setter of the week, while Maegan Mills came away with Freshman of the Week after back-to-back breakout performances against the Shockers. Kat Cooper and Olivia Vance round out the weekly award list as Honorable Mentions.
Hipp's resume continues to grow after earning her second Setter of the Week award this season and fourth of her career. The Fort Myers, Fla., senior averaged 12.14 assists per set to finish with 85 total in the wins over Wichita State. She also boosted the defense with 19 digs in match No. 1 and 11 digs in match No. 2 for her fifth and sixth double-doubles on the year. Hipp also contributed two setter dump kills, two service aces and two blocks while finishing with a .443 setting percentage.
An outside hitter from Topeka, Kan., Mills took control of the attack for Tulsa, leading the Golden Hurricane with 30 kills at a rate of 4.29 per set. She peaked with 20 kills in the road win at Wichita State, helping TU snap a 24-match road losing streak to the Shockers. Then, Mills led Tulsa again with 10 kills in the home sweep over Wichita State. On top of her offensive success, she also put up eight digs, three aces and two blocks.
Senior middle blocker Kat Cooper enjoyed an efficient showing for Tulsa, finishing second on the team with 26.5 points (3.79/set) and 23 kills (3.29/set). The Springdale, Ark., native's final hitting line for the weekend ended with 23 kills to just four errors on 47 total attacks for a .404 hitting percentage. She also fortified the front line with six blocks, including four in the three-set home sweep against Wichita State.
Vance comes away with her second Weekly Honorable Mention after a brilliant defensive showing through the two wins. From nearby Bixby, Okla., the junior outside hitter had 13 blocks for 1.86 per set – the highest average among all American Conference players this week. On offense, Vance also killed the ball 19 times (2.71/set).
