11/17/2025 11:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball
TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa (4-0) brought home the Mayor's Cup after defeating Oral Roberts (2-3) 78-69 at the Mabee Center, with Tulsa securing the win in overtime after a 15-6 scoring advantage. Tulsa capitalized on free throws, converting 29 of 41 attempts to maintain their unbeaten record.
"I just can't say enough about this team's fight and heart," Head Coach Angie Nelp said. "There was so much grit in those possessions where we had to fight for those defensive rebounds and knock some free throws down late. I just felt like our team had no quit in them tonight.
"Hannah [Riddick] was so impressive. So proud of the way that she converted late. You saw her catch on the block, have to do moves and countermoves and finish through contact. I felt like she did such a great job tonight."
Riddick dominated the floor with 27 points and 18 rebounds, both career-highs for the redshirt senior from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Tulsa began the first quarter with an assertive start, as Riddick scored the opening layup following an offensive rebound. Alisha Peavy extended the lead with consecutive 3-pointers, the second assisted by Jade Clack, bringing their advantage to 8-2 by the 8:03 mark. Despite Kayten Donley's 3-pointer for the Golden Eagles narrowing the gap to 11-7, the visiting team maintained control. With 3:10 remaining, Haven Fisher's fastbreak layup pushed the score to 15-7. The quarter concluded with the Golden Hurricane ahead, 17-11, after Riddick added two free throws in the final minutes.
The second quarter saw the Golden Eagles take control early with Taylor Jackson scoring a layup and a jumper, bringing the score to 15-13. The Golden Hurricane responded with a defensive stop, allowing Peavy to make a critical layup at 6:49, giving them a 19-16 lead. Gentry Baldwin's 3-pointer at 6:13 sparked a comeback for Oral Roberts, eventually tying the game at 21 with free throws. Tulsa's Mady Cartwright contributed a layup and a free throw to push the score to 28-25. However, Anna Trusty's layup with 1:06 left tied the game again at 29-29, concluding a tightly contested quarter.
Tulsa began the third quarter with a 3-pointer by Dora Toman at 9:13, assisted by Cartwright, giving them a slight edge. The Golden Eagles responded quickly with a jumper from Jalei Oglesby at 8:40 and later tied the score at 39-39 with a 3-pointer by Baldwin at 3:40. The Golden Hurricane's Abby Jegede contributed a 3-pointer at 8:12 and was active on the boards, but turnovers plagued the visitors throughout the quarter. Oral Roberts capitalized on Tulsa's mistakes, taking the lead late in the quarter, with Donley scoring four crucial free throws, ending the quarter ahead, 44-39.
Tulsa and Oral Roberts exchanged leads in a tense fourth quarter, ultimately ending in a 63-63 tie. Cartwright started the quarter strong with a jumper, cutting Oral Roberts' lead to 44-41 with 9:49 remaining. A'Maya Holton of the Golden Eagles responded quickly with a layup, assisted by Baldwin, maintaining their advantage. Jegede was pivotal, scoring multiple times, including a crucial pair of free throws with 15 seconds left to give Tulsa a 63-62 lead. However, Ari Gordon tied the game with one of two made free throws at the 2-second mark, sending the game to overtime at 63 points all.
In a decisive overtime performance, Tulsa secured a 78-69 victory over Oral Roberts. Riddick played a pivotal role, opening the period with consecutive layups to extend Tulsa's lead. Peavy added a crucial 3-pointer at 2:13, assisted by Riddick, putting them ahead 70-65. Despite a late effort from Baldwin, who contributed a fastbreak layup and two free throws, the Golden Hurricane maintained their lead. Layla-J Cameron and Cartwright sealed the win with successful free throws in the final seconds.
