Tulsa Drops Opening Game of Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship

11/28/2025 1:25:00 PM | Women's Basketball

NASSAU, Bahamas — Tulsa (5-1) fell to Kent State (4-4), 75-69, in the opening round of the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship.

The Golden Hurricane's comeback bid came up short in the fourth quarter, trimming a 12-point deficit to just two at 63-61 with 2:45 left in the final stretch. Unfortunately, TU never gained control of the game as they dropped their first game of the year, six games into the season.

Mady Cartwright scored a career-high 28 points, fueled by five 3-pointers and a career-best 11 free throws made. Hannah Riddick took care of the boards (11) and blocks (2), while Layla-J Cameron came off the bench to lead Tulsa with three assists and two steals.

The game between TU and Kent State opened with Abby Jegede securing an early lead for Tulsa with a tip-in just 22 seconds into the first quarter. The Golden Flashes responded with a jumper and free throw by Janae Tyler at 7:45, giving them a 5-2 advantage. Mya Babbitt extended KSU's lead with a layup at 5:56, assisted by Dionna Gray, bringing the score to 11-2. However, Tulsa answered with Mady Cartwright's crucial performance, highlighted by two three-pointers, including one at 1:55 that brought Tulsa within one point. Hannah Riddick's three-pointer at 34 seconds secured a 15-13 lead for Tulsa to close out the quarter.

The Flashes surged ahead in the second quarter, led by Babbitt, who contributed early with a layup at 7:39. Tulsa's Dora Toman responded with a three-pointer at 8:55, assisted by Layla-J Cameron, to keep the score tight. However, KSU's Emory Klatt extended their lead with a tip-in at 4:29, pushing the score to 28-22. Rylee Kalocay capped off the quarter with a three-pointer with just five seconds left, securing a 36-28 lead for KSU at halftime.

Tulsa struggled to gain momentum in the third quarter against KSU, trailing 38-28 after Babbitt's early layup at 9:25. Tulsa's Haven Fisher responded with a layup at 6:57, assisted by Cameron, narrowing the gap to 38-30. Despite a late push with a three-pointer from Cartwright at 3:14, KSU maintained their lead with contributions from multiple players, including a three-pointer by Kalocay at 2:03. The quarter concluded with the Golden Flashes leading 58-47, as Gray's free throws in the final minute helped secure their advantage.

Tulsa's late surge in the fourth quarter was not enough to overcome KSU, resulting in a 75-69 loss for the visiting team. Cartwright contributed significantly with a three-pointer at 6:05 and two free throws at 1:07 that helped narrow the gap. Riddick's defensive efforts, including a steal and multiple rebounds, kept Tulsa competitive. Despite scoring 22 points in the final quarter, Tulsa couldn't capitalize on late opportunities, allowing Kent State to maintain their lead and secure the win.

The Golden Hurricane will take on Houston on Sunday, Nov. 30, at 10 a.m. Central in the consolation round.
