Tulsa Ends Non-Conference Action with 74-67 Win at Florida
12/21/2025 5:37:00 PM | Women's Basketball
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Tulsa ended the 2025 non-conference season on a high note, defeating the Florida Gators (11-3) 74-67 in The Swamp, capitalizing on 32 points off turnovers and a strong fast-break performance.
With an 8-4 record heading into American Conference play, this is the sixth consecutive season the Golden Hurricane's finished the non-conference schedule with a .500 win percentage or better. Head Coach Angie Nelp has officially accomplished the feat in all five years at the helm.
In addition, Sunday's victory is Tulsa's first win on the road at an SEC school since December 1, 2005, against Arkansas (66-64).
Junior guard Mady Cartwright shined bright in front of a crowd of 2,871 loud Gator fans in Exactech Arena, leading the Golden Hurricane with 26 points off 7/13 made field goals -- five of which were 3-pointers -- while adding seven points at the free throw line and finishing with team-highs of three assists and three steals.
Redshirt senior forward Hannah Riddick (19 points) and junior guard Jade Clack (16 points) also finished in double-digit scoring, while freshman guard Dora Toman led the way in boards with five.
In the end, Tulsa was 47.1% from the floor (24/51), 37.5% from deep (9/24) and 60.7% from the charity stripe (17/28). Despite getting out-rebounded 43-22, TU started the game strong, maintained the lead for nearly 35 minutes and made the plays that mattered down the stretch.
The game began with Laila Reynolds of the Gators scoring a layup, assisted by Me'Arah O'Neal, to put the home team on the board. Hannah Riddick quickly responded for the Golden Hurricane, converting two free throws to tie the score at 2-2. Jade Clack's steal led to a fastbreak layup, giving the visitors an early advantage. Mady Cartwright contributed significantly with a 3-pointer at 6:42 and later a fastbreak layup at the 1:00 mark, helping the Golden Hurricane extend their lead. Despite Liv McGill's last-second layup for Florida, Tulsa finished the first quarter ahead, 20-15.
In the second quarter, the Gators' Laila Reynolds scored early with a layup at 9:16, assisted by Me'Arah O'Neal, giving Florida a narrow lead. However, the Golden Hurricane responded with a 3-pointer from Haven Fisher at 8:28, assisted by Cartwright, regaining the advantage. Tulsa capitalized on a series of 3-pointers, including one from Alisha Peavy at 6:17. Cartwright also contributed with a 3-pointer at 4:35, followed by a fast-break 3-pointer from Clack at 4:14. Despite McGill's efforts for Florida, including scoring the final two free throws after a foul as the quarter ended, the Golden Hurricane maintained a narrow 38-35 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Cartwright's 3-pointer at 8:05 extended Tulsa's lead to 41-35. Riddick contributed significantly, hitting a layup and a pair of free throws to push the score to 48-39. McGill responded for Florida with a jumper and an assist to Reynolds, closing the gap to 48-41. However, Tulsa's Dora Toman and Cartwright each hit layups, while Cartwright also added another 3-pointer, bringing Tulsa's advantage to 53-41 with 3:10 remaining. As the quarter concluded, Clack added a layup at 0:44, and Riddick secured the last point with a free throw, ending the quarter with Tulsa leading 57-46.
The fourth quarter featured a tense back-and-forth as both teams vied for control, with Florida outscoring Tulsa 21-17 in the comeback bid. UF's Nyadieng Yiech scored a crucial 3-pointer at 5:42, narrowing Tulsa's lead. However, Tulsa's Cartwright responded with a 3-pointer of her own with 26 seconds remaining, extending their advantage and essentially sealing the game. Cartwright's scoring continued with four consecutive free throws in the final seconds, securing a 74-67 victory for Tulsa. Despite Florida's efforts, including multiple points from McGill, Tulsa's late defensive stand proved decisive in the win.
Tulsa will begin American Conference play on December 30, when they host the 3-10 Wichita State Shockers in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
