Golden Hurricane Win American Opener Against Wichita State
12/30/2025 10:26:00 PM | Women's Basketball
TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa (9-4, 1-0 American) toppled Wichita State (3-11, 0-1 American), 64-58, in the Donald W. Reynolds Center for the opening game of American Conference action. The Golden Hurricane dominated the boards 44-24 en route to their sixth consecutive conference-opening win and seventh straight home win this season.
Redshirt junior guard Abby Jegede led the team with 18 points off 6/7 shooting and 4-of-5 made 3-pointers to go with two points from the free throw line. Redshirt senior forward Hannah Riddick took care of the boards with 11 rebounds and finished with a double-double with 16 points under her belt, while Jade Clack secured 12 points in her third start for TU. True freshman guard Dora Toman coordinated the offense with a team-high five assists, leading the Golden Hurricane in that category for the seventh time this season.
"Just super proud of our team and the fight that we had today" Head Coach Angie Nelp said. "I think anytime you can be in our conference and you can hold an opponent to just 58 points, that speaks a lot about our defense. I felt like we really won the game on the boards tonight. That rebounding margin for us was really important in the way that we battled on the boards, and I thought was really key. I think one of the biggest things that this team has is resilience, and I felt like that shown through. Sometimes, it's not about how you are when things are going really well, but it's about how you play when adversity hits or something unexpected comes your way."
The game began with Abby Jegede putting the Golden Hurricane on the scoreboard with a layup at 9:22. The Shockers briefly tied it, but Jegede's 3-pointer at 8:00, assisted by Hannah Riddick, pushed Tulsa ahead 5-2. From there, Tulsa gave up the lead or even allowed a tie score for the rest of the game. Dora Toman furthered the lead to 7-4 with a layup at 5:06. Wichita State's Azjah Reeves narrowed the gap with a layup at 2:51, though Mady Cartwright's 3-pointer at 1:26 expanded Tulsa's advantage to 16-8, closing the quarter at 16-10 after Treasure Thompson's layup for the Shockers.
Tulsa widened its lead in the second quarter, outmatching the visitors 18-11. Jegede sparked the Golden Hurricane with a three-point play at 9:33. Riddick was instrumental, netting key layups like those at 1:39 and 1:15, keeping Tulsa's momentum alive. Wichita State's Bre'Yon White managed a layup at 3:10, but Tulsa's superior defense and scoring efficiency held their lead intact by halftime.
In the third quarter, the Golden Hurricane maintained their grip, leading 53-42 despite Wichita State's efforts. Jade Clack made a notable impact, sinking two 3-pointers, including one at 5:01 following an assist from Haven Fisher. Riddick bolstered Tulsa with significant plays, such as layups at 7:08 and 6:41. Jaila Harding kept the Shockers in contention with three 3-pointers, the last with 1:14 remaining. Tulsa countered Wichita State's six steals with four of their own, as turnovers flowed on both sides.
In the final quarter, Tulsa held onto their lead amid Wichita State's surge. White began scoring for the Shockers with a jumper at 9:20, narrowing it to 53-44. Jegede and Toman added crucial points for Tulsa, with Jegede's 3-pointer and Toman's tip-in extending the score to 55-50. Harding nailed a 3-pointer with 36 seconds left, cutting Tulsa's margin to five. Nevertheless, Riddick's decisive free throw at 27 seconds helped ice the game, sealing the 64-58 victory.
Tulsa will continue American Conference action at Tulane (5-8, 0-1 American), where the Golden Hurricane will face the Green Wave in New Orleans for a 6:30 p.m. showdown on Tuesday, January 6.
