Men’s Tennis Fights Hard in Loss at No. 12 Oklahoma
2/5/2025 10:26:00 PM | Men's Tennis
NORMAN, Okla. — Despite the final score reading 7-0 in favor of the 12th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners (7-1), the Tulsa men's tennis team didn't make it easy and even saw four singles players reach a third set. The Golden Hurricane fell to 3-5 after dropping its third consecutive dual match.
Oklahoma took the doubles point to start the day, taking the third position 6-1 and clinching the opening score with a 6-0 shutout in the No. 2 spot, leaving junior Timothy Carlsson Seger and sophomore Alex Okonkwo unfinished up 4-2 atop the doubles lineup.
In singles play, Tulsa players gave everything they had against their Sooner counterparts. The first and quickest match to finish was a three-setter in the second position in which a ranked Sooner came back from down a set against Okonkwo.
Freshmen Connor Doig and Nikola Puntaric each stuck around against Oklahoma's veteran players in the bottom two spots but couldn't close out. After the Sooners claimed the No. 4 line, Seger and junior Luis Felipe Miguel went the distance in the third and first courts, respectfully. Although each player was at one point just a few scores away from winning their matches, Oklahoma players showed why they rank among the best in college tennis, closing out the 7-0 decision over Tulsa.
The Tulsa men will come home to the Michael D. Case Tennis Center to host New Mexico State (5-6) for a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 7. Then, Tulsa will host Illinois State (3-3) Sunday, Feb. 9, at noon.
