Hurricane Men’s Tennis to Take on Rice in The American Quarterfinal

TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa men's tennis team (14-13) was granted the No. 4 seed in the American Athletic Conference Championship, earning a spot in Friday's quarterfinal round against No. 5 Rice (13-9) at 2 p.m. Central. This year's tournament is paired with the women's at Memphis' Leftwich Tennis Center.

Tulsa in Conference Championships
  • The Golden Hurricane men seek their 17th conference championship title and first in The American.
  • Director of Tennis and 34th-year Men's Head Coach Vince Westbrook looks to earn his 10th conference title at The University of Tulsa. He enters the week with two Missouri Valley titles and seven championships in Conference-USA under his belt.
  • Tulsa is 6-9 all-time in the AAC Tournament.
 
The 2025 AAC Bracket
  • The winner of Tulsa-Rice will take on the winner of No. 1 South Florida and No. 8 Wichita State/No. 9 UAB. In Saturday's semifinal round.
  • Taking the top seed in the field is 23rd-ranked South Florida, who went 19-3 during the regular season.
  • Memphis (14-11) took the second seed and Florida Atlantic (10-8) was awarded the No. 3 seed.
 
Previewing the Rice Owls
  • Friday will be the 27th meeting between Tulsa and Rice since the turn of the century, with TU leading 17-9.
  • Tulsa has won six of the last seven meetings, including this year's matchup where the Hurricane prevailed for a 4-3 win over the Owls in Tulsa.
  • The Hurricane will be looking for revenge for last year's AAC Quarterfinal, where Rice cut Tulsa's tournament run short with a 4-1 decision.
  • Petro Kuzmenok remains the Owl leader for singles play, holding a 19-11 overall mark and 11-7 tally in dual matches. Emir Sendogan is 11-5 in dual-match play and Kabeer Kapasi is also 11-7.
  • Kuzmenok and Santiago Navarro form Rice's premier doubles team with an 8-6 overall record and a 7-3 clip in dual-match action.
 
Tulsa in the ITA Rankings
  • Tulsa's No. 1 singles player Alex Okonkwo, a sophomore, finally cracked the nation's top 100, currently sitting at No. 100 entering the AAC Championship. A thrilling 6-1, 7-6 (10-8) tiebreak win against No. 26 Paul Inchauspe on the road against Princeton helped send Okonkwo back to the nation's premier list of singles players.
  • Okonkwo also came just a few games shy of upending the No. 1 player in the country, Michael Zheng of Columbia. He forced a third set with a tiebreaker win in the second stanza, but would fall 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 2-6.
  • Okonkwo and junior teammate Timothy Carlsson Seger were unranked before the March 18 poll, jumping up to No. 60 in the doubles rankings and are now No. 79 in the nation. They've won their last seven consecutive matches.
  • From here on out, the ITA will release team, singles and doubles rankings every Tuesday, with the next happening on the morning of April 22.

  • Tulsa came up just shy in the regular-season finale on Sunday, falling 4-3 at Memphis.
