Tulsa Shuts Out Temple to Advance to AAC Quarterfinals

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The fourth-seeded Tulsa women's tennis team took care of business Thursday in the American Athletic Conference Women's Championship First Round, shutting down the 13-seed Temple Owls (7-13) for a 4-0 victory.

The Golden Hurricane's win at the Leftwich Tennis Center in Memphis moved them to 17-7 on the season, and they will take on the winner of No. 12 East Carolina-No. 5 Wichita State in the quarterfinal round on Friday (4/18) at noon Central.

Doubles play went smoothly for the Hurricane as TU picked up 6-2 and 6-3 wins in the first two positions to run away with the opening score, leaving freshman Isabella Basson and sophomore Tayla Wilmot unfinished at 5-2. Earning their sixth doubles clinch together was seniors Ana Naranjo Martinez and Mariana Manyoma Velasquez, who improved to 26-4 overall and 19-1 in dual matches.

Each of Tulsa's three singles winners put together straight-set victories, starting with back-to-back 6-1 set wins by Velasquez at Singles No. 2. She now stands at 14-3 in dual-match action this season.

Sophomore Erin McKenzie was the next to finish, putting away a 6-0, 6-3 result in the fifth spot to move to 16-11 overall and even up her dual-match record at 8-8.

Clinching the 4-0 win was senior Maria Berlanga Bandera, who prevailed with a 7-5 first-set win and a decisive 6-1 victory in set two to send the Hurricane to the quarterfinal.

When the match ended, senior Lily Hutchings had just tied up her head-to-head tilt at one set all in the 3-spot, Wilmot was one game away from winning (6-2, 5-4) in the No. 4 position and true freshman Eda Numanoglu, who saw her first action since Feb. 2 against Kansas City, held a set lead at the bottom of the lineup.
