STILLWATER, Okla. — The Tulsa Golden Hurricane defeated the Oklahoma State Cowboys, 19-12, in the Gateway First Bank Turnpike Classic on Friday night at Boone Pickens Stadium. This victory marked Tulsa's first win over Oklahoma State since 1998 and its first triumph in Stillwater since 1951.
Baylor Hayes completed 23 of 36 passes for 219 yards and one touchdown, adding 23 rushing yards on seven attempts. Dominic Richardson carried the ball 31 times, amassing 146 rushing yards, setting a career-high in carries. Ray Coney led the defense with 13 total tackles and one sack. Seth Morgan contributed significantly on special teams, converting four of five field goal attempts.
In the first quarter, Oklahoma State opened the scoring with a 35-yard field goal by Logan Ward at 11:45 after a productive drive featuring notable rushes by Zane Flores and Rodney Fields Jr. Tulsa responded quickly with a touchdown drive, highlighted by a 42-yard pass from Hayes to Brody Foley and a 19-yard touchdown pass to Braylin Presley at 9:36.
Tulsa extended its lead with a 27-yard field goal from Morgan at 2:41, concluding a 15-play drive that included a key 15-yard reception by Zion Booker to the Oklahoma State 11-yard line. The quarter ended with Tulsa leading 10–3, showcasing effective offensive execution and strategic play-calling.
In the second quarter, the Golden Hurricane extended its lead over the Cowboys with a methodical 16-play drive that resulted in a 38-yard field goal by Morgan at 7:49, making the score 13-3. Hayes continued to move the chains with precise short passes, including a key 15-yard completion to Presley and another 17-yard pass to Booker. On their next possession, Tulsa added another field goal, a 47-yarder by Morgan at 2:32, bringing the score to 16-3. Tulsa outgained the Cowboys 266-117 in the first half of the game.
The third quarter began with Tulsa receiving the kickoff, and they quickly established momentum with a 19-yard rush by Richardson. Tulsa's drive was capped by a successful 47-yard field goal by Morgan, extending their lead to 19-3 with 11:14 remaining in the quarter. Oklahoma State responded with a promising drive, highlighted by a 36-yard rush by Fields Jr., but the drive ended unsuccessfully on a fourth-and-2 at the Tulsa 5-yard line. Tulsa's defense then forced a turnover on downs and later recovered a fumble, maintaining their defensive stronghold and preventing the Cowboys from closing the gap.
The fourth quarter opened with the Cowboys' Flores scoring a touchdown with a 5-yard rush at 14:14, cutting Tulsa's lead to 19-9. A field goal by Ward from 49 yards with 5:49 remaining further narrowed the gap to 19-12.
Tulsa's Richardson had a standout 39-yard rush early in the period, but the drive stalled after a series of incomplete passes and penalties. Despite a late attempt by Morgan for a 50-yard field goal, which missed, Tulsa maintained its lead as Oklahoma State's final drive ended with the clock expiring at the 10-yard line.
Looking ahead, the Golden Hurricane will host Tulane at H.A. Chapman Stadium in Tulsa, Okla., on Saturday, September 27. Kickoff for next weekend is TBA.
