Tulsa Prevails in 57-53 Road Win at North Texas

DENTON, Texas —Tulsa (13-6, 5-2 American) edged the North Texas (11-9, 5-3 American), 57-53, on Friday, holding on after a crucial 20-point fourth quarter. Tulsa's defense played a pivotal role, forcing 21 turnovers and recording 12 steals.
 
Freshman Dora Toman earned her first career double-double with team-highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Golden Hurricane are now 6-0 when the four-time American Freshman of the Week scores 10 or more points in a game.
 
Redshirt senior forward Hannah Riddick tied Toman with 16 points, while junior guard Jade Clack picked up 12 points during the contest.
 
Tulsa's defense held North Texas to just 28.6% shooting from the field, including 1-17 from 3-point range. TU led in the game for only 2:45 but made the clutch plays near the end when it mattered most.
 
The Mean Green's Megan Nestor led UNT with 19 points and 27 rebounds. It's the single-game record for most rebounds collected by an individual opponent in Tulsa history.
 
The game opened with Tulsa and UNT trading baskets, leading to a competitive first quarter. Megan Nestor of UNT scored early with a layup at 9:12, setting the tone for the home team. Tulsa's Hannah Riddick responded with a layup at 8:43, contributing to a series of ties throughout the quarter. Jade Clack of Tulsa and Chania Price of UNT each added to their team's scores with layups, maintaining the close nature of the quarter. UNT edged ahead with successful free throws by former Rice Owl Jazzy Owens-Barnett in the closing seconds, finishing the quarter with a 14-10 lead.
 
UNT capitalized on Tulsa's turnovers to extend their lead in the second quarter. Mekhia Chase scored two fast-break free throws at 8:08, followed by a layup from Cherie Spencer to push the score to 18-10. Tulsa's Hannah Riddick responded with a jumper at 6:02, assisted by Jade Clack, narrowing the deficit to 20-12. Megan Nestor's two successful free throws at 5:47 increased UNT's lead, but Tulsa continued to fight back with Laura Di Stefano's four consecutive free throws in the final minute, closing the quarter at 24-18 in favor of UNT.
 
Tulsa managed to narrow the gap against North Texas, outscoring them 19-15 in the third quarter. Megan Nestor of UNT opened the quarter with a layup at 9:29, assisted by Mekhia Chase. Tulsa's Dora Toman responded with a 3-pointer, contributing significantly with 10 points in the quarter, including a pair of free throws at 3:21 that brought Tulsa within one point. Despite a late fast-break layup by Jade Clack at 1:13, Tulsa trailed UNT 39-37 heading into the final quarter.
 
Tulsa rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring North Texas 20-14 to secure a narrow victory. Megan Nestor's layup at 9:36 initially extended UNT's lead to 41-37, but Tulsa quickly responded with a jumper from Hannah Riddick. Jade Clack and Laura Di Stefano each contributed key baskets, with Di Stefano's jumper at 6:09 tying the score 48-48. Mady Cartwright's 3-pointer at 1:52 gave Tulsa a 55-53 lead, which was solidified by her two final free throws with 10 seconds left, sealing a 57-53 win for the visitors.
