Cartwright and Crew Break Shooting Records in 94-82 Win over Temple
1/9/2026 10:51:00 PM | Women's Basketball
TULSA, Okla. — It was a night of high-octane offense as Tulsa (11-4, 3-0 American) held off Temple (7-8, 1-2 American), 94-82, in the Donald W Reynolds Center, securing the victory with a strong fourth-quarter push fueled by junior guard Mady Cartwright, who scored a career-high 31 points and made five 3-pointers without a miss during the game. The Golden Hurricane shot 58.9% in field goals as a unit and went 13-for-17 (76.5%) on 3-point shooting. Both percentages are new program records in a conference game and the latter is a Reynolds Center record.
Cartwright became the first Tulsa player to ever go 5-for-5 on 3-pointers. She is also the first player in the country to score over 30 points and hit five 3's in a single game. In addition to her superb deep-ball game, she also went 10/11 from the free throw line.
Redshirt senior forward Hannah Riddick secured her third consecutive double-double, earning 22 points and 11 rebounds. She's now averaging 20 points and 11 boards per game through three conference games.
"I'm super proud of this team and the team effort we had," Head Coach Angie Nelp said. "This was a win against a good team here at home. I felt like two things really shone through for us. I felt like it was our teamwork and toughness. I think that in the first half we shot the ball extremely well, and then heading into the second half, there were some mistakes that we had to just continue to move forward from together. And I felt like our team did a really good job of that. I liked our tempo. I liked the way that we played fast, and I liked the way that we played aggressive."
Tulsa started the first quarter hot with Mady Cartwright draining a three-pointer just 18 seconds into the game, assisted by Jade Clack. Cartwright continued to make an impact offensively, contributing multiple defensive rebounds and another three-pointer at the 3:55 mark. Abby Jegede and RyLee Grays also added to the Golden Hurricane's lead with successful three-point shots. The Owls struggled to keep pace, with Saniyah Craig and Drew Alexander providing some scoring, but Tulsa's efficient shooting and defensive efforts helped them finish the quarter with a comfortable 27-13 lead.
Tulsa extended their lead in the second quarter with an early surge, highlighted by Cartwright's three-pointer at 8:56, assisted by Hannah Riddick. Tulsa's defense was strong, with Clack contributing a block at 8:45 and a steal shortly thereafter, leading to successive points that widened the gap. Temple's Kaylah Turner responded with a pair of three-pointers, but Tulsa maintained control, ending the quarter with a 53-37 lead. The quarter concluded with Tulsa outscoring Temple 26-24, showcasing effective shooting from both inside the paint and beyond the arc.
Temple cut into Tulsa's lead in the third quarter, outscoring the home team 22-13. Alexander's three-pointer at 7:54 capped an early offensive surge for Temple, narrowing the gap to 10 points. Cartwright responded for Tulsa with a fast-break three-pointer at 6:46, maintaining their edge. Despite the Owls' efforts, including a timely layup by Craig at 4:05 and a three-pointer from Turner at 1:52, the Golden Hurricane held on to a 66-59 advantage by the quarter's end. Riddick's defensive rebound at the buzzer preserved Tulsa's lead heading into the final quarter.
Tulsa secured a decisive victory with a strong performance in the fourth quarter, outscoring Temple 28-23. Cartwright played a pivotal role, scoring a layup and a free throw in the opening seconds to extend the lead to 69-59. Riddick contributed significantly with assists and multiple layups, including a fast-break layup with 1:44 remaining, pushing the lead to 91-76. The Owls' efforts were bolstered by Alexander's three-pointer and free throws, but the Golden Hurricane maintained control, finishing with a 94-82 win.
Tulsa will hit the road for more American action, taking on East Carolina (10-6, 2-1 American) on Tuesday, January 13, at 5 p.m. CT.
