Golden Hurricane Drop Road Contest at East Carolina

1/13/2026 7:25:00 PM | Women's Basketball

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Tulsa (11-5, 3-1 American) fell to East Carolina (12-6, 4-1 American), 79-48, on the Pirates' home court. It's the first American Conference loss for the Golden Hurricane this season after starting 3-0.

The first quarter opened with the Golden Hurricane struggling to find the basket, as they missed several early layup attempts. The Pirates took a lead with Savannah Brooks hitting consecutive 3-pointers, contributing to a fast-paced transition game that resulted in eight fast-break points. Tulsa's Abby Jegede scored Tulsa's first points with a layup at 8:39, assisted by Dora Toman. Despite trailing for most of the quarter, the Golden Hurricane closed the gap with a late 3-pointer from Mady Cartwright at 0:24, assisted by Toman, bringing the score to 18-11 in favor of the Pirates by the end of the first quarter. Brooks led the scoring for the Pirates with nine points, all from long range.

The Pirates seized control early in the second quarter with a Keanna Rembert 3-pointer at 9:45, assisted by Kennedy Fauntleroy, extending their lead. The Golden Hurricane struggled with turnovers, committing eight in the quarter, which hampered their offensive efforts. Toman kept Tulsa competitive with a jumper and a 3-pointer, the latter assisted by Hannah Riddick, but East Carolina maintained their advantage with consistent scoring, including a layup by Anzhane' Hutton. Shamaryah Duncan contributed late for the Golden Hurricane with a 3-pointer and a fast-break layup, narrowing the gap before the half ended with a score of 33-23 in favor of East Carolina.

The Pirates capitalized on their strong shooting to extend their lead in the third quarter, finishing with a 26-17 scoring advantage. Rembert contributed early with a jumper at 9:39 and later added a pair of free throws at 1:31. Brooks played a key role, assisting on two crucial plays and adding a 3-pointer at 5:32. For Tulsa, Jade Clack hit a 3-pointer at 6:21 and added a layup at 5:44, while Riddick scored a fast-break jumper at 2:46. Despite Tulsa's efforts, the Pirates maintained control, closing the quarter with a jumper from Fauntleroy at the 4-second mark.

East Carolina outscored Tulsa 20-8 to secure the victory. Taylor Barner and Hutton each contributed a 3-pointer early in the quarter, helping to extend East Carolina's lead. Rembert added five points, including a 3-pointer at the 5:47 mark. Meanwhile, the Golden Hurricane struggled offensively, making only 2 of 15 field goals, with Haven Fisher and Jegede scoring the team's only field goals in the final quarter.

Tulsa will swing over to Charlotte (8-9, 2-2 American) to take on the 49ers on Saturday, January 17, at 3 p.m. CT.
