Tulsa Drops 72-60 Decision at South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. —Tulsa fell to South Florida, 72-60, at the Bulls' Yeungling Center Wednesday night. The Golden Hurricane (16-8, 8-4 American) forced 18 turnovers and scored 20 points off those opportunities but couldn't keep up with the Bulls, who won the rebounding battle 51-33.
Junior guard Mady Cartwright led the way in scoring with 18 points with redshirt senior forward Hannah Riddick right behind at 15 points. Cartwright had four 3-pointers throughout the night and pushed TU with four assists on offense, while Riddick almost had a double-double with nine rebounds to go with two blocks and three steals.
The first quarter began with South Florida taking an early lead through Stefanie Ingram's free throw at 9:34. Tulsa responded with two free throws by Riddick, giving TU their only lead of the day. Katie Davidson's three-pointer shortly after at 8:12 helped the Bulls regain momentum, assisted by Ingram. Cartwright's three-pointer at 7:21 kept the Golden Hurricane close, but Carla Brito's jumper and subsequent layup by Davidson extended the Bulls' advantage to 8-5. Abby Jegede's triple at 2:59 narrowed the gap to 11-8. However, Ines Piper's two free throws in the final minute secured the Bulls a 13-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, South Florida maintained a narrow lead over Tulsa, finishing the quarter ahead 27-22. Early in the quarter, Riddick scored a layup for the Golden Hurricane with an assist from Cartwright, closing the gap to two points. Edyn Battle responded for South Fla. with a jumper, pushing its lead to four. Tulsa's defensive efforts were highlighted by three steals and two blocks, with notable contributions from Rylee Grays and Alisha Peavy. Layla-J Cameron scored a late layup for the Golden Hurricane with 31 seconds remaining, but the Bulls ended the quarter ahead by five points.
Tulsa and South Florida battled to a 22-22 tie in the third quarter. South Florida's Davidson contributed with a jumper and a three-pointer, helping to maintain their lead. Cartwright responded for the Golden Hurricane with a jumper and a three-pointer of her own, assisted by Jade Clack and Cameron, respectively. L'or Mputu made a critical layup and free throw for the Bulls in the closing minutes, extending their advantage. Riddick's consistent scoring, including a late free throw, kept the Golden Hurricane within striking distance.
South Florida pulled away in the fourth quarter to secure a 72-60 victory over Tulsa. Battle's early layup set the tone, and her consistent scoring, including another layup at 8:31, helped the Bulls maintain control. Cartwright kept TU competitive with a three-pointer at the 5:08 mark, reducing the deficit to 12 points. Despite Tulsa's efforts, Davidson's three-point shooting widened the gap, with her second three-pointer of the quarter pushing the lead back to 15 points at 4:21. The Bulls' Brito contributed with crucial rebounds and a late layup. The game concluded with Piper's free throws at 32 seconds to seal the win.
TU will swing over to Florida Atlantic (11-13, 5-7 American) to take on the Owls in a rematch on Saturday, February 14, at 1 p.m. CT.
