Mady Cartwright Eclipses 1,000 Career Points in Loss at Rice

2/28/2026 3:34:00 PM | Women's Basketball

HOUSTON, Texas — Tulsa junior Mady Cartwright became the 14th player in program history to join the 1,000-point club on Saturday as the Golden Hurricane (18-10, 10-6 American) fell to Rice (26-3, 16-0 American), 105-65, in Houston. She entered the day needing only seven points to eclipse the mark, and she did so with three back-to-back 3-pointers in the first quarter en route to finishing with a team-high 17 points.

Redshirt senior forward Hannah Riddick also put together her 19th double-figure scoring game this season with 13 points, while junior guard Jade Clack finished with 14 points.

The game began with a quick layup by Hannah Riddick of the Golden Hurricane, followed by a three-pointer from Rice's Dominique Ennis, setting an early competitive tone. Mady Cartwright was impactful, hitting two three-pointers and assisting twice in the quarter. Victoria Flores kept the hosts in contention, contributing with jumpers and free throws. With 1:09 remaining, Ennis tied the game at 23 with another three-pointer, and despite several late scoring attempts, the quarter ended evenly matched at 23-23.

Rice outscored the Golden Hurricane 30-16 in the second quarter, extending its lead. Hailey Adams sparked the Owls with a jumper at 9:20, putting them ahead 25-23. Riddick evened the score briefly with a layup at 8:17, but Rice responded with a 12-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Flores at 7:22 and two free throws from her at 6:23. Cartwright managed a three-pointer at 4:23, assisted by Dora Toman, to narrow the gap. Despite Tulsa's late efforts, including a three-pointer from Toman with 23 seconds left, Rice closed the quarter with a three-pointer from Flores at 7 seconds, solidifying its advantage.

Rice extended its lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Golden Hurricane 24-17. Cartwright opened Tulsa's scoring with two free throws, but Flores responded with a layup and subsequent free throw at 8:16. Aniah Alexis contributed to Rice's advantage with a three-pointer at 7:44, assisted by Adams. Louann Battiston further widened the gap with a layup and two free throws, keeping the Owls ahead. Despite Cartwright's successful three-pointer at 5:04, Tulsa trailed 66-53 by the end of the quarter.

Rice pulled away decisively in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Golden Hurricane 28-9 to secure a comprehensive victory. Ennis hit a three-pointer at 9:05, assisted by Shelby Hayes, extending Rice's lead early in the quarter. Tulsa struggled with turnovers, committing eight in the quarter, which Rice capitalized on with 15 points off turnovers. Alexis contributed significantly to Rice's scoring, adding a jumper and a free throw to push the score to 91-58 with 6:09 remaining. Despite a three-pointer from Jade Clack at 3:49, Tulsa could not close the gap, with Rice maintaining a strong defensive presence and sealing the win.

Tulsa will hit the road again to take on UTSA (12-14, 7-8 American) on Wednesday, March 4, in San Antonio.
