SAN ANTONIO — Tulsa (19-10, 11-6 American) secured a 53-41 victory over UTSA (13-15, 8-9 American) at the Convocation Center Wednesday night, locking up the No. 4 seed and a double-bye in the upcoming American Championship in Birmingham, Ala., with just one game remaining in the regular season.
The Golden Hurricane will face either the fifth, eighth or ninth seed in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, March 12, at 12 p.m. Central to begin their tournament run.
Tulsa's big three came through once again on Wednesday as redshirt senior Hannah Riddick (17 points) and junior guards Jade Clack (11 points) and Mady Cartwright (10 points) all finished in double-figure scoring to pull away from the Roadrunners.
Freshman guard Alisha Peavy, a native of San Antonio playing in front of her family and hometown crowd, led TU with eight rebounds while Cartwright coordinated the offense with four assists.
The game commenced with a competitive first quarter, as UTSA and Tulsa exchanged leads. Cheyenne Rowe opened the scoring with a layup for UTSA at 7:53. Tulsa responded with Clack's three-pointer at 7:09, assisted by Cartwright, momentarily putting the Golden Hurricane ahead. However, Adriana Robles contributed with a jumper and a layup, helping the Roadrunners regain the lead. Despite a late three-pointer from Clack, Ereauna Hardaway's three-pointer with just two seconds remaining secured a 12-8 lead for UTSA at the end of the quarter.
Tulsa capitalized on UTSA's scoring difficulties in the second quarter, outscoring the home team 11-1. Dora Toman was instrumental, sinking two three-pointers, including one at 4:30 assisted by Cartwright. Clack added to the lead with a three-pointer at 7:49, also assisted by Cartwright. Despite their efforts, UTSA struggled offensively, managing only a single point from a free throw by Idara Udo at 4:53. The Golden Hurricane's defense forced seven turnovers and held the Roadrunners to 0-for-10 shooting from the field, maintaining a firm grip on the game.
Cartwright led Tulsa's charge in the third quarter, contributing crucial points with a layup and two three-pointers, including one at 7:08 that widened the lead to 31-24. Riddick was instrumental, securing rebounds and adding a tip-in with 34 seconds left to push the score to 39-26. Tulsa capitalized on UTSA's turnovers, with Clack and Layla-J Cameron each securing a steal. The quarter ended with Tulsa outscoring UTSA 21-13, extending its advantage.
Tulsa maintained its lead throughout the final quarter. Riddick and Peavy made key plays, with Riddick scoring a layup at 9:03 and Peavy adding a fast-break layup at 7:53. Hardaway contributed for UTSA with a three-pointer at 7:35 and a fast-break layup at 2:28, but Tulsa's defense, highlighted by a block from Toman at 3:57, limited UTSA to 15 points in the quarter. A late three-pointer by Jayda Holiman with 23 seconds left was not enough for the Roadrunners to close the gap, as the Golden Hurricane secured a 53-41 victory.
Tulsa will host East Carolina (21-9, 13-4 American) on Saturday, March 7, at 2 p.m. for Senior Day and the regular season finale.
