Tulsa Falls at Home to UTSA

TULSA, Okla. — It was a tough shooting day for Tulsa as the Golden Hurricane (16-7, 8-3 American) fell to UTSA (11-11, 6-5 American), 66-47, in the Donald W. Reynolds Center Saturday, with the visiting Roadrunners outscoring Tulsa 22-9 in the third quarter to pull away in a tight game that featured seven tie scores before UTSA pulled away after the break.
Junior guard Mady Cartwright led all TU players with 11 points, while redshirt senior Hannah Riddick picked up five rebounds.
"Certainly not our best game, but I'm always proud of our teamwork," Head Coach Angie Nelp said. "I'm always proud of our toughness and fight that we had until the very end. Offensively, we know we didn't have our best game. We knew we were playing against a good team that's well coached. They did a good job, and we needed to continue to grow in some areas offensively. I felt like in the first half, we were right there despite some foul trouble. We had some different rotations on the floor, and we needed to have a little bit of better defensive coverages for us. And have a few more shots fall our way. Our team is going to continue to learn and grow. This journey is far from over, and I'm excited for some of the things we've done. We also understand we're going to take this moment to grow as a team so we can play our best basketball in March."
Tulsa and UTSA opened play with a tightly contested first quarter. Jade Clack initiated scoring for the Golden Hurricane with a jumper at 7:23, assisted by RyLee Grays, while Mia Hammonds quickly responded for the Roadrunners with a layup. The teams exchanged leads, but Tulsa maintained pressure with Cartwright and Haven Fisher each contributing key baskets, including Fisher's three-pointer at 2:36. Despite four free throws from UTSA, Tulsa held a narrow 14-12 lead at the end of the quarter, with Alisha Peavy's layup at 2:06 helping to solidify the early advantage.
Tulsa and UTSA remained closely matched in the second quarter, marked by multiple lead changes and ties. UTSA's Ereauna Hardaway initiated the scoring with a layup at 8:48, contributing to their 15 points in the quarter. Tulsa responded with Clack's two successful free throws at 8:39, temporarily securing a lead. Abby Jegede's three-pointer at 2:34, assisted by Cartwright, tied the game at 23-23. However, Damara Allen's jumper at the 1:02 mark, assisted by Hardaway, helped UTSA close the quarter with a 27-23 lead at the break.
UTSA took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring Tulsa 22-9. Cheyenne Rowe's free throw gave UTSA an early 28-23 lead at 9:45. Then, Idara Udo contributed significantly with consecutive layups, extending UTSA's advantage to 36-25 by 6:34. Tulsa's Cartwright briefly interrupted UTSA's run with a layup at 6:20, but UTSA quickly regained momentum. Jayda Holiman's three-pointer at 2:45 further increased UTSA's lead to 44-29. Allen sealed the quarter with a three-pointer at 0:54, ending the quarter with UTSA firmly in control, leading 49-32.
Tulsa struggled to maintain possession early in the fourth quarter, with turnovers leading to points for UTSA. Adriana Robles capitalized on a steal and hit a three-pointer at 9:38, extending UTSA's lead. Despite efforts from Tulsa's Hannah Riddick and Jegede, who each contributed layups, UTSA maintained their advantage. Udo's layup and free throw at 8:36 further increased UTSA's score. Tulsa's Grays managed a three-pointer at 2:52, but Holiman's fastbreak three-pointer at 3:20 kept UTSA ahead. The quarter concluded with Jegede making a jumper with 18 seconds remaining, ending the game with UTSA leading 66-47.
TU will look to bounce back with a pair of road games at South Florida (13-10, 6-4 American) and Florida Atlantic (10-13, 4-7 American) on Wednesday and Saturday of next week.
