TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa men's tennis defeated No. 2 seed Charlotte (15-8) 4-2 in another dramatic match on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Hurricane (18-12) advance to the championship match of the American Conference Championship for the first time since their first two seasons in the league. Tulsa still seeks its first American title, though the program owns nine conference championships under head coach Vince Westbrook from previous conference affiliations. TU will face No. 1 Rice (15-7) in the championship match.
Tulsa grabbed the doubles point to open the match. Gus Tettamble and Victor Tosetto set the tone with a 6-2 win, and Nikita Volonski paired with Timothy Carlsson Seger to clinch the point with a 6-4 victory.
Both teams traded blows in singles, and two three-set matches ultimately decided the outcome. Carlsson Seger put Tulsa on the board first with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win. Charlotte responded with two victories, as Moritz Muenster defeated Ruben Fernandez 6-4, 6-3, and Takeshi Taco dropped a 5-7, 1-6 decision on court three.
With the match tied at 2-2, the final result came down to the outer courts. Tosetto rebounded from a 1-6 first set to take the second 6-4. The Porto Alegre, Brazil, native carried that momentum into the third and secured another 6-4 set to clinch the match and send Tulsa to the championship.
Volonski left his match unfinished while trailing 4-6, 6-4, 4-2 in the third set in the No. 1 slot.
"Our doubles were very solid, all three positions played very well. When we have that kind of energy, we are hard to beat in doubles," said head coach Vince Westbrook. "In singles, it's interesting today that the three who didn't win yesterday won today. We're excited going into the finals. (…) It was a dogfight the last two days, four hours yesterday and three hours today, but we're going to be ready to go tomorrow. The guys are excited and they'll leave it all out on the courts."
Tulsa will host the championship match at 12 p.m. at Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Admission is free, and fans can watch live on ESPN+.
