TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa women's tennis (12-10) defeated No. 61 Denver (10-7) 4-1 on Friday afternoon inside Case Tennis Center. The win marks the Golden Hurricane's highest-ranked victory this season.
Doubles featured a tight battle, with both teams trading wins before Tulsa secured the clinch. Maria Santos and Isabella Basson struck first with a commanding 6-1 win over Denver's Yunfei Cai and Marley Lambert. The Pioneers answered on court two, as DU evened things up with a 6-1 win over Uta Asakura and Carolina Alonso. In the third spot, Erin McKenzie and Coral Valle delivered another 6-1 result to secure the doubles point for Tulsa.
Singles play brought another hard-fought contest. Denver grabbed early momentum when Cai defeated McKenzie 6-1, 6-1 to tie the team score at 1-1. Tulsa responded immediately, as Alice Baba and Carolina Alonso each earned straight-set wins, 6-4, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-3, respectively.
With the remaining matches pushing into third sets, the clinch came down to Valle at the No. 5 position. The Madrid, Spain native bounced back from a 2-6 first set loss and took the second set 6-4. She carried that momentum into the decider and closed out a 6-3 win to secure the match for TU. The victory marks Valle's second consecutive singles win, her first back-to-back wins this season, and her first collegiate clinching win.
Up next, Tulsa plays at home for the final time this season to host Memphis on Sunday at 11 a.m. Senior Maria Santos will be honored before the match.
