John McCullough is in his third year at The University of Tulsa. He joined the staff as the director of player development for the 2022-23 campaign and was promoted to assistant coach/director of scouting prior to the 2023-24 season. He brought NBA playing and coaching experience to the Golden Hurricane, as well as 12 years as a women’s college basketball head coach and 14 years as an assistant men’s collegiate coach.
During his tenure, Tulsa has tallied 42 wins and advanced to the WBIT in 2023-24.
McCullough was a key part of the staff that led Tulsa to a historic season in 2023-24 as the Golden Hurrricane posted the school’s best record in 19 years at 25-10 with a share of the American Athletic Conference regular season championship with 13 wins to only five losses in league play. He helped coach AAC Player of the Year Temira Poindexter and AAC Most Improved Player of the Year Delanie Crawford to all-conference honors and WBCA All-American Honorable Mention status. During the season, the team earned victories over teams from the ACC, SEC, Big 12 and Big East and ended the year with a quarterfinal run in the inaugural Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT).
McCullough came to Tulsa following 10 years (2012-21) as an assistant coach and advanced scout for the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers. He assisted with practice, game planning and player development, and helped integrate analytics data.
Prior to the Trail Blazers, McCullough served as an NBA officials observer for seven years (2006-12). Previously, McCullough was the women’s basketball head coach at Oklahoma Baptist University for 12 seasons (2000-12), where he became the school’s all-time wins leader and was named the NAIA District Women’s Coach of the Year. He also had stints as the men’s basketball head coach at New Mexico Highlands University (1996-2000), and as a men’s basketball assistant coach at both New Mexico (1988-95) and SMU (1985-88).
McCullough played at the University of Oklahoma for three seasons (1976-79) and was tabbed as an NCAA and NABC All-American, as well as earning 1979 Big 8 Player of the Year honors. He went on to play for the NBA’s Phoenix Suns for four years (1980-83) and then played in Europe for three seasons (1983-85).
McCullough earned his bachelor’s degree in petroleum land management from Oklahoma in 1981 and his master’s degree in sports administration from New Mexico in 1990.
McCullough and his wife, Stephanie, have one adult son, Stephen. Stephen and his wife, Michelle, have two children, Gavin and Jack.
