Volleyball Opens Season With A Pair of Wins

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball squad relied one a trio of "old" stand-bys to secure a pair of victories in the White Eagle Invitational in Hamilton, N.Y., on Friday evening. Tulsa defeated Hartford in the evening's first match, 3-1, then defeated Colgate 3-0 in the nightcap.
In the first match, the Golden Hurricane had a trio of players with double-digit performances. Last season, Tulsa's then-freshmen accounted for 67-percent of the team's offense. Against Hartford, the now-sophomores accounted for 75-percent of the team's offense. Middle hitter Dana Weddle recored 20 hits, while Kristin Bailey and Lindsay Eaves recorded 14 kills apiece. Setter Vanessa Thon posted 54-assists to go along with a team-high 11 digs for her first double-double of the year. Junior Nathalia Araujo aslo added 10 digs.
Tulsa recorded double-digits for kills in all four games enroute to the 30-20, 30-24, 27-30, 30-16 victory. For the match, the Hurricane had a .307 hitting percentage with a high of .448 in the fourth game. Tulsa held Hartford to only nine kills and a .103 hitting percentage in the final frame.
The Golden Hurricane defeated the host team in the evening's final contest, Colgate. Eaves posted 10 kills, while Thon recorded 25 assists and freshman Evyn Bandy had 12 digs.
Tulsa utilized serving and defense more than hard swings as the Hurricane recorded 14 serving aces and 13 total team blocks, with 24 block assists. Weddle, Thon and Araujo all posted three aces apeice, with senior Tammy Leuer and Patricia Marques posted two aces apeice. Weddle recorded eight blocks, while Amber Martin, Eaves and Bailey all recorded four blocks apeice.
The Hurricane outhit the Raiders .276-.020, with a 38-26 kill advantage. Tulsa again recorded double-digits in kills in all three games, while holding Colgate to negative hitting percentages in the first and third games.
