Tulsa Sweeps Centenary In Volleyball Home Opener

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball team opened its home season on a good note by sweeping Centenary in three games (30-13, 30-14, 30-18), before a crowd of 225 at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Wednesday night. The win was TU's 11th consecutive against teams from Louisiana and the third consecutive victory over the Ladies of Centenary.
Sophomore transfer Patricia Marques made the most of her first collegiate start by leading the Hurricane attack with 12 kills. She also was one of four TU players to record double-digits in digs, with 10. Fellow sophomore Dana Weddle posted a .778 hitting percentage with eight kills as well.
Setter Vanessa Thon contributed 30 assists playing in only the first two games. Freshman Evyn Bandy came in to set during the third game to record 12 assists, after playing the libero position most of the evening. By recording 11 digs as well, Bandy posted her first collegiate double-double. Senior Tammy Leuer along, with Thon, also posted 11 digs. Thon has recorded three double-doubles in five matches this season.
Tulsa utilized a 48-28 advantage in kills, in addition to a .398-.077 advantage in hitting percentage. The Hurriane forced the Ladies into 19 hitting errors, while recording three solo blocks and 16 block assists.
Tulsa will travel to Louisana again this weekend for a tournament at Northwestern State. Grambling State, Alcorn State, NSU and Texas Southern are all scheduled to compete in the tournament. The Hurricane return to the friendly confines of the Reynolds Center on September 13. Tulsa will face Louisiana-Monroe in its first match of the Ewing-Grover Olds/GMC Invite at 6 p.m.
